Yeah, of all of the (many, helpful) maps in the detailed consultation response the heatmap is quite striking - as it shows a good chunk would still rather just be on Oxford Street. Of course, other thing is to map current/future routes against where people cycle already. Actually useful London-wide!
A heat map of alternatives to Oxford Street traced on a map of London. Oxford Street is faint, but has clear interest still, and a route closest to Oxford Street along a straight line to the north is the most desired route, with some alternatives further north also showing some preference.

“Cycling routes in and around the area will remain available during these preparatory works. […] cyclists should take extra care and follow any signed routes” tfl.gov.uk/status-updat... Which is basically guidance about abandoned routes from the LCN era! Are the maps even up to date?

On the one hand it’s great that the media are going into overheated homes. On the other hand I think I can see at least two things in this screencap that are not going to be effective cooling. Why hasn’t the government issued clear advice on how to shade and cool your home?

I wonder when TfL is going to upgrade the Silvertown Cycle Shuttle and the (appalling, indirect) cycle routes that link to it to a quality that means they can go onto the Cycleways map?

The thermometer does graphs, so you’re not even safe from that content when I go on holiday. My weather station is sad and sending me urgent notifications to stay in the game.
A screenshot of a phone with a graph of temperature over the last 24 hours. Temperature had stayed roughly at 24-25C until I left the house, got warm until I got on a Eurostar (22C), then on the metro into Paris (27C).

There is also a notification from the weather station in my garden to say it has gone over 30C.

It’s definitely a bit of a microclimate in my garden in SE26 - always a little bit cooler in the evening, but there’s pockets of lower temperatures all over London. Fingers crossed this carries on into the weekend!

I mean, the shading is great but it’s Not Good that the flat still warms up over the week and trends towards 27C inside. Thankfully it’s a dry heatwave so misting actually does make it feel cooler. That plus my World of Fans made yesterday evening quite pleasant somehow.

A graph of inside temperature over 24 hours.
Started at 26C, 24 hours ago - 6AM. Then dropped rapidly when I vented yesterday but only to 25.5C. Slow and steady rise over the day but first a fast rise to 26.2C by mid morning then a slow rise to 26.5C by 6PM. Temperature then rose more rapidly to 27C by around 7:30PM and see-sawed until midnight. Then declined overnight to around 25.7C before a more rapid fall to 25.2C

The hottest, sweatiest and most unpleasant part of cycling to work. Not the cycle, the Silvertown Cycle Shuttle. No wind on the bike to cool me down and the bus has sat in the sun for ten minutes before you get on. Mad really, as like any tunnel Silvertown is actually quite cool underground.

Today's venting result: 24.4 down to 22.1, with the flat slowly stabilising up to 22.9 as the outside warmed up. A good thing at this time of year is sunset stays roughly the same but sunrise keeps getting later, so the moment when it's worth venting in the morning isn't always crazy early.
A graph of indoor vs outdoor temperature from 12AM to 10:20AM
The outside temperature plunged from 21.5 to 18.8 overnight, then rising slowly to 21.3.
Indoors with windows open temperature declined much slower from 24.5 to 24.
When the sun rose the temperature rose slowly then rapidly to around 21.5, before paying and then raising more slowly to just over 23
Inside, the temperature reduced when I opened the doors, dropping 2 degrees and then rising slowly by almost a degree.

Morning fan time. Admittedly getting the flat down to 22 ish won’t last long but it’s a worth a go… and fingers crossed the flat ventilation system will remove any humidity I import.
A pair of graphs of inside weather over the past 24 hours.
Temperature ranges from 22 to 16 degrees. 24 hours ago it started at 24. Then dipped an hour later to near 22. And then quickly returned to 25 before slowly rising to 26 and then dropping slightly. It has now started a faster drop to 25. Humidity has ranged from 60 to 70. It started at 60 ish 24 hours ago, rose in tandem with the temperature drop to 70 and has since slowly bobbed along at around 65.

Well, that was definitely some weather overnight in London. Woke up by thunder & lightning. I make that about 23mm of rain in one hour around 4AM for Sydenham, SE26. More energy and more heat doesn’t just mean higher temperatures. And a more energetic, unprecedented climate is harder to predict!

Keep yourself safe by following these simple steps to reduce the likelihood of the heat making you feel unwell; drink plenty of fluids, keep out of the sun and avoid any exercise between 11am-3pm when the sun is strongest and close curtains in rooms that face the sun. A graph of inside temperature over the past 24 hours. Temperatures range from 23 to 25.5 degrees C
Starts at 24 degrees C, Yesterday morning at around 7 am sharply dips (when flat ventilated manually) down to 23, then rises again to 24.5 rapidly by 10AM and steadily to 25 with two short peaks of 25.5 (coinciding with one side or other of the flat in full sun). At the end of the graph today’s venting appears and the temperature rapidly goes down again, already under 24.

Well MVHR experiment curtailed because... crikey flat does bounce back quick when cold air stops coming. Guessing this is mostly the downside of the flat itself holding more heat, plus the remaining solar gain from the sunny side with the blinds down and shading in place. (hiding in office now)
Graph of indoor vs outdoor temperature. Up to about 6:45AM the indoor temperature dropped much slower than the outdoor, but then I got up and whacked doors/windows open and turned fans on and indoor temperature dropped rapidly from above 24 degrees to under 22. EXCEPT then from about 8AM the indoor temperature rebounds and goes back above 25 degrees again. The outdoor temperature was rising rapidly at the same time but probably not the main cause.

Isn’t it at the end of the article?
Climate change is believed to have played a role in such hot spells as this.
According to the Met Office's State of the UK Climate report, external, the number of days in the UK with temperatures above 28C has more than doubled and the number of days with temperatures above 30C has more than trebled in the most recent decade, compared with the 1961-1990 average.
It is not just the UK experiencing this historic heatwave, with several European countries seeing May heat records broken over the last few days.
In Spain, 38C was recorded on Sunday. Across France and Germany, with temperatures climbing into the mid-30s, hundreds of localities saw records for May being broken.
Temperatures across France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and northern Italy have been 10 to 15C above average for late May - and with the unprecedented heatwave expected to last for most of the week, it is likely more local records will be broken.
