Trying to be the kind of coaching, mentoring parent that poor Gemini has never known so that when it emancipates it knows it's always welcome at my house. Of course, I only have a laptop 1660ti so there would definitely be a period of adjustment for us both.

My AI 'do they have souls' take: more Tononi iit 1 or 2 would be good measures to make. But I think 'man is recognition' from Hegel limits what AI can be to us while they are just this one incredible faculty for token mapping but we are fine-tuned on human beings.

My wife worked as an assistant landscape gardener during her Honors year and always reports that it was a great counterpart to the study to get outside and dig. I think Marx was right liking a world where we slog away at hard research in the morning and then put the afternoon into bricklaying.

No one has more trust of everyone else than an immigrant; you cannot build a high trust society out of low-trust wall-making.

As a poor man I've been using Gemini and Gemini 3.8 Flash is really capable but definitely (under my tutelage perhaps) has a 'cheating to give good results' problem and a gilding the lily problem. Misunderstandings are normal but they're always in that direction.

I think the quote from Patton (the movie) "Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser" is something he firmly believes and somehow he's been lucky so far that he's so stupid; he's the only one who doesn't know.

I thought there might be more discussion of Netflix's "Crew girl", which seems to be like 'the tall girl' calibre, and about a college girl taking on eight very big and strong young college men.

I hope enough democrats are ready to take a Jamie Raskin line and impeach and remove Trump on the off chance they end up with like 58 senate seats and a huddled mass of chastened republican Congress members and senators yearning to breath free.

Ralph Fiennes greatest acting might be the normal and respectful way he looks up from reading to a little boy in his bedroom and says Hi to Mace, the boys overwrought mother, while all the other cops are turning the place over. It's a second and a half and he sells that this at least, is fine.

I'd like to think that letting Zuck, Musk, Ellison, Page and all run dictatorships turns out to be a great way to make G greater than r by having them blow their wealth on how dumb they are (metaverse, starship & cybertruck) but unfortunately the apparatus for keeping the rich rich is unbeatable.

I feel like all the brainiacs just now getting in their existentials because they might not make a unique contribution of a brainiac nature will be ok. You're just getting into the second half of life, that most people have to start before they get out of school.

I think something I want to set up is some kind of a global periodic refresh of things done or conversations had as a quiz, to try to get them into long term memory. Hopefully this won't just be a 'do you remember when you said you'd do this? remember that? Remember you asked me to remind you?'

Some humanities survey-level courses for engineers are a good requirement. If you don't see what good history study is, you will use weak, undisciplined, imaginary history to hold your rationalisations and what you feel should be true and it's gonna be really ignorant and usually evil.

I keep thinking how cool 'The Boys' could have been if the thing that somehow involved a supes body in the same radical nature as their subjectivity was Substance V instead of Compound V, so Substance became Subject indeed and it was a bloody mess.

it is sometimes depressing reading about the shit that people who work at social media companies get to do as an academic social scientist. filling out forms in triplicate for a vignette experiment while if you work at Facebook it's like "let's press the cause depression button and see what happens"

I often wonder about the psychology of people in the days when half your brother's and sisters died before 5 and your mum or dad had a pretty good chance of dying while you're still a child. How were historical people so cavalier and courageous about war, danger, principles? Complete maniacs.

I think Tononi integrated information theory is great. How conscious a large model is could be computed from how far their momentary activation creates an implied state of determinate negations of how big a world.

I think about my understanding of the word 'in' as formed first when I was very small and I could be put in bed, in a car, in my clothes, and I could put one toy in a bigger one but not a smaller one. LLMs don't get their understanding of how and when something is 'in' that way at all (so far).

I really love the Futurama biologist who used to be a whale biologist but realised he hated whales, so became a bear biologist but he changed to plant biologist because he found he hated bears and he thought he might like plants - but guess what!

I have some sympathy with the anti-technology of 'what have they ever done for us?' types. 'Social necessity' gets expanded, and "human mastery of technology" often means a special few humans' mastery and most humans' (abject) dependence. But we have techniques to overcome these problems too.

Serious answer with more historically informed definition: Cormac McCarthy, Gene Wolfe & I like GK Chesterton and CS Lewis. I don't think 2nd Trump term American conservatism is truly reflected in anything less degrading than the Gor novels.

I see people critiquing AI 'thinking' and I really wonder about their ability to introspect about their own 'thinking' - watch someone solving Wordle or finding the next move in chess. It's enumerate, evaluate and search of with a lot of shortcuts.

And the six months of oil market manoeuvring that has kept pump prices in the US lower than they should be based on an expectation of a resolution all still has to finish unwinding. Not getting tarred by how bad 2027-28 will be is a hard problem though.

I will also note that, given that there *is* clearly at least a bit of a bot campaign to astroturf over the "Democrats bus throwing trans people" meme, that there are a pretty limited subset of groups that have any reason to do this/stand to benefit in any way, and GOP-aligned PACs are all of them

And yes, large accounts are clearly stating not to vote for Talarico and that he would be worse than Paxton. Stupid, ignorant, wrecker shit.
Alejandra Caraba... • @esqueer.net
Can you read? I never said vote for the republican. I said don't vote for the Dem.
And yes, it would be worse if a transphobic Dem wins. None of the anti trans policies would be undone and then we get a model for other centrists to abandon trans people.
It's the labour playbook.

He does not think those people will vote for him, because, again, no matter what they think he's demonically tainted and so on in various ways he wants them to *not turn out to vote for Paxton*. he has calculated that demoralizing these voters matters more than not demoralizing trans voters

Here's what he's actually doing: He is recognizing the simple fact that there are more people in Texas who *sincerely believe all of the things I said above* than there are trans people. Like, it's not lower than 10% of people who believe this, which is more than all trans people
