the OSR and PbtA scenes have some real common ground and i'm glad that some of the petty tribalism around both has died out. we get better games when folks take from multiple movements for their designs, imo!

Golden Age Minecraft (alpha/beta) is the video game equivalent of the OSR in tabletop RPGs. The Adventure Update (beta 1.8) was a D&D 3e-esque breakpoint. At one point there was even a Minecraft beta 1.7.3 retroclone (Truecraft, now abandoned). Same with WoW Classic or Old-School Runescape...

Another thing to remember on this bisexual day is that The Grungler is canonically bi. I do enjoy how it's become a term for "token cis guy who hangs out with a bunch of trans weirdos" but the original post was also about straight women being weird about bi men.

women will go on a 1st date with a guy and things will be going well until the guy casually mentions he's bi and she'll go home and start posting stuff like like 'we need to normalize being straight' and 'whatever happened to beauty' meanwhile the guy went home to play video games with a bunch of weird discord transsexuals and he named his character 'the grungler' and he keeps saying stuff like 'check it out guys, i'm the grungler'

After messing around with Caves of Qud and Jupiter Hell (and Tales of Maj'Eyal, and Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, and ADOM, further back...), I've had a funny realization with regards to 'traditional' versus 'modern' roguelikes (or roguelites, or whatever the lingo is these days).

Discord messages that say:
You know
As I've been playing and thinking on some traditional roguelikes recently
I've realized a common distinction between them and most of their more modern kin
Which is that like
Trad roguelikes have a much more set character advancement
As in like
You level up and you pick abilities from a skill tree or whatever
But it's not like a randomized choice, just a straight freeform RPG type of thing
So you can always choose to go for a specific perk in ways that you couldn't in "pick one of 3-4 random options" type of games

Which is Interesting
Puts them closer to their TTRPG ancestors in a way
Where the equipment that you find and buy is more out of your hands but where the character advancement is more controllable

A very real problem we're having now is that the medium is no longer new, the new creators are inspired by other video games instead of other art. Miyamoto made Pikmin because he liked being in the garden, but every ONL game is being made because open worlds are cool and UE5 has nice visuals
