Close up of Marvel Girl's face as she looks forward towards someone off panel and says, "The people of your nation need to feel like someone is acting on their behalf. Not deciding what's best for them--not decididing what is and is not in their best interest -- but someone who fights fair for them. And that's us."

Personally this is a style of video that resonates with me as a viewer. This along with videos that feel hopeful, inspiring, or spur curiosity to check out the book for myself. Your One Piece video was a video that checked-off these boxes imo

Feels like a lot of multi-card combo decks fall under this idea, but Unchained comes to mind The deck’s lines are so dependent on the desired endboard that a careless misplay could be the diff between a multi-layered endboard with 7+ disruptions and a weak field that loses to a single board breaker

The Eternaut (Oesterheld/Breccia) is one of the greatest comics ever created. It was created in a time of rising political dictatorship and its author was “disappeared” a few years later. I beg you to go and read it. It is the last story on earth that should have gotten the AI slop treatment.

Comics really open up a lot when you stop focusing your reading exclusively on specific DC/Marvel characters and instead follow around writers and artists whose work you enjoy because you will almost inevitably open yourself up more to new stories, genres, and voices.

And realizing that this is an untapped lens of interpretation for the series just kind of “engages” me, you know? I’m curious now! I want to see what other people gleam from the character and the series by viewing them through this lens of mental health and analysis! Maybe one day I’ll do it 🤷🏽‍♂️

And not to speak backhandedly about dissociation as a coping mechanism for a liberating moment of peace (people suffering through difficult mental heath have to do what they have to do), but I just think it’s interesting that I couldn’t find a single comment speaking on this element of Shinpei…

Mel (Nu Comics) @nucomics.bsky.social · 11/12/2024
Shinpei’s time-traveling is almost heralded as something to look up to for all the self-sacrifice he makes by undergoing each leap But from the lens of mental health, it can also be seen as a child dissociating to escape the larger issues he’s avoiding… he’s just choosing one battle over another.

If I’m recalling correctly, the most that the series touches on this is a line where a friend acknowledges that Shinpei hasn’t slept in the past 7 or 8 time loops he’s gone through because he’s constantly had to operate in a state of survival mode… but that’s all

As en educator, when I see somebody like Shinpei try to “remove themselves” from their feeling instead of processing them… I see a hurt human who has had to mature at a rapid rate for the sake of survival… and it hurts to see that in another person And yet the series rarely touches on this…

Seeing as how the death of his best friend is one of the first things we learn about Shinpei (as it’s his entire reason for returning home), it paints him as a character suffering from unresolved trauma at the moment. We later learn he is in fact suffering from SEVERAL layers of unresolved trauma…

Shinpei (like many popular anime protagonists) is just a teenager. And I’m not going to filibuster about “omg, could you imagine if a kid really went through this?!” But Shinpei is framed as a down-to-earth boy who is struggling to process his feelings — particularly the passing of his best friend…

To be a little more fair to the series, the “bird’s eye view” catchphrase by the main character (Shinpei) alludes to his supernatural ability to ascend to a higher dimension to travel across time. I’ve read from others online insisting that this is why he repeats the line so much, but…

10. My partner & I recently watched Summer Time Rendering, and there’s a particular theme of the protagonist repeating “I need to take a step back and get the bird’s eye view” It was a charming little quirk at first, but as the series was coming to a close… it just kind of hit me as “dissociation”

The film is brimming with scenes, art, and even characters that show the audience that it not only cares about Latinx culture, but it really KNOWS the history behind the culture as well… and I’m so thankful this film got made ✨

Instead, the small scene felt inspiring and empowering… I wanted to see the recognition that my culture comes from greatness — that it comes from beautiful art, epic stories, and commanding icons. I wanted the world to see a FRACTION of the greatness that I know Latinx culture carries…

I usually resent the “Mesoamerican-contact-with-aliens” trope for the backhandedly racist colonialism it carries, BUT there was so much thought & consideration behind the scenes of the film that I could tell it wouldn’t dare to try and make a joke out of deeply personal culture like that…

Mel (Nu Comics) @nucomics.bsky.social · 10/12/2024
I remember watching the film in theaters and as the opening credits played, there were scenes of a mesoamerican-inspired glyph of the scarab as it would have been interpreted by indigenous cultures in Central America, and there was just something about its portrayal that struck a chord with me…

9. God, Blue Beetle was such a nice movie It had no business being so sweet and heartfelt as a love letter to Latinx culture, comics, & community It was really HERE and it left nothing but inspiration for the millions of Latinx viewers who’ve gotten the chance to see themselves and their history…

But as the anime adaptation of TYBW continues to repair some of the weaker parts of the original manga, I look forward to the ways it continues to provide layers of interpretation to the characters and their roles in the overall plot of the story

Fans have often complained about the failings of TYBW arc of the manga, and one of them being that “villain motivation” largely took a back seat to “power scaling” & “action sequences” in the final chapters (understandably so due to the rushed efforts to finish the series)

Again, the manga and anime haven’t put in the work to really depict Yhwach as anything relating to Christ save for his relationship as son to the Soul King, but the opening sequence to Cour 3 certainly offers viewers a new dimension of depth to the character that I very much wish was more in-canon

So I would like to put forth that Without Any Words can carry a double-meaning wherein it can be read as the laments of Yhwach himself — which paints him as an antithetical Christ who resents his father and the world he’s made rather than one who wants to sacrifice himself to save it…

Given that Cour 3 sees Yhwach’s execution of his plan to dethrone the Soul King, I would argue that Cour 3 is really following Yhwach as a character above all the others Episode 2 in particular sees a young Yhwach as his father is cut into pieces to become the Soul King as tears fall upon his face

Neither the manga nor the anime choose to explore the character as such, but Yhwach as the son of the Soul King can be read as an alternate take to the “Christ-like character” trope through his relationship to the “God” of the world of Bleach

But the choice of the word “God” over “Fate” struck such a chord for me when I listened to Spanish covers because it completely reinterpreted how I came to view the character of Yhwach through such a simple word choice (which is part of what needs to be considered when translating a work)

I don’t doubt that there’s a level of cultural nuance to this discussion wherein we can argue both sides of the aisle, or even say that Japanese elements of religion and faith transcend the binary that comes with a “Fate” vs “God” distinction…
100
Mel (Nu Comics) @nucomics.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
This distinction is such a big deal because it colors the entire interpretation of the speaker’s lyrical laments. The entire song is framed as a prayer that the speaker is giving, and to say whether it’s a prayer to “Fate” vs “God” deeply affects the listener’s understanding of the speaker’s plight
100
Mel (Nu Comics) @nucomics.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
I’m not usually one to have complaints about anime/manga as it’s translated abroad, but the official subtitles given to the opening sequence’s lyrics seem to take quite a few liberties with the meaning of some parts of the song’s message — particularly the decision to use the word “Fate” over “God”
