We are excited to announce that we've reached one year of radon measurement at the ENA station! We are looking forward to continuing the measurements and starting to dig into the results.
Line plot of radon concentration over time. The time scale is September 2025 to August 2026. The radon concentrations are below 12 Bq m^(-3).
The line is mainly below 1.5 Bq m^(-3) but with many irregular short-term spikes going up to values between 3 Bq m^(-3) and 6 Bq m^(-3).The spikes appear to be less often an pronounced from November to March and more often and higher from July to August.

The spectrodosemeter newly set up at ENA station is also delivering data. From the spectrum, the presence of naturally occurring radionuclides like K-40 and Tl-208 is visible.
A line plot showing counts on a logarithmic scale over energy in keV. The y-scale ranges from about 10^(-1) to 10^4 and the x-scale from 0 keV to 2700 keV.
The line starts around 10^3 with a lot of noise and then the noise reduces in the first 500 keV. The line falls with some bumps to about 10^1 counts at 1400 keV and then a peak occurs slightly below 1500 keV. After that the line further decreases and the noise slightly increases. A second peak occurs around 2600 keV. Both peaks are hightlighted with vertical lines, the first labelled K-40, the second Tl208.

Seeing the first data from a newly set up instrument is exciting! We are now getting data from the PTB instruments at ENA set up in August. Here you can see the detector and the sum of all gamma spectra recorded since then by the HPGe detector.
Photo of a silver metall tube, which sits vertically on a smaller tube. The smaller tubes leads into a black boxy thing with handle. Two cables go into the construction. One into the box and one into the top tube. The box is placed on a beige floor in front of a white wall. To the right and left, frames containing boxes with cables some connected, some disconnected are visible.Data line plot. The main line is blue and goes through the whole plot, short bits are coloured in different colors. Those bits do not seem to overlap, and are placed and seemingly random distances. THey always follow exactly the main line.
The x-axis shows the gamma energy in keV, the range is from 0 to about 2750. The y-axis shows counts from 10^1 to 10^5 on a logarithmic scale.
The line seemingly starts at (0,0) and rapidly increses to about half way between 10^4 and 10^5. It slightly dips with higher energies, then increases and rounds off. From about 100 kEV to 1250 keV it decreases and flattens out at 10^3. Then a sharper decrease follows to half the order of magnitude at 1400 keV and then a peak to more than 10^4 at somewhat below 1500 keV. After this peak the values slowly decrease further and flatten around 10^2 untill 2350 keV. Then they further decrease to a bit above 10^1. At about 2600 keV a second big peak occurs and after it the values are nearly constant.
The blue line shows some noise (more at higher energies due to the lower values and logarithmic scale).
Several smaller peaks occur throughout the energies. Most of them are highlighted in a colour, though not all coloured bits correspond to a peak.

Last week, our colleagues from PTB installed their gamma radiation monitoring devices at the ENA station. They spent three days unpacking, assembling, moving devices and battling with the internet connection. With great support from Tercio and Bruno, the local ENA staff, everything got set up.

In parallel to the field campaigns, our project partners at IFIN-HH (Romania) are developing models to describe the gamma dose background for specific conditions. The models are based on gamma radiation and radon concentration measurements from the ENA station (Graciosa) and at PTB's reference site.
Explanatory graphic with the title "Ambient gamma dose rate modelling". Three light blue boxes are arranged next to each other and connected by arrows going from left to right. The left most box is labelled "build". In it a green box is labelled model and small icons depicting a thermometer, rain drops, wind, a pressure gauge and a cloud are arranged one labelled "Rn".
The middle box is labelled "compare". above a plot showing two lines "measured vs. modelled" is written. The colors of the words match one of the lines each. The plot shows radon over time. The measured line is more spiky but follows the overall curvy line of the model. One exception where the measured curve has a peak is highlighted with an exclamation mark.
The last box is labelled "understand". In it is text: "unexpected values: anthropogenic effect? measurement error? natural variation?"
The NuClim logo is placed in the top left corner, the IFIN-HH logo in the bottom right corner.

Next week, Xuemeng Chen will talk in our presentation series about atmospheric aeorols and their effects on low-level clouds in marine environments. It's online: Feb 11th, 15.30-16.30 UTC (Starts half an hour later than our other presentations!) Register here: shorturl.at/poyKz Photo: S. Röttger
Photo of a smiling, asian woman. She is standing next two a table with mayne cables, tubes and small electronic devices. If there is any order in the arrangement, it does not become obvious to the unknowing observer.
Her hand is comfortably resting on one of the devices. She is holding a laptop and a phone. In the background some more equipment with larger tubes, and stored bags as well as another person walking by are visible.

The recordings for our first two presentations are available on our website: www.nuclim.eu/news-events/... The first was an overview of NuClim by our project coordinator @susanabarbosa.bsky.social and in the second Craig talked about radon-based greenhouse gas tracing.
Announcement of presentation series datates and topics. The title is "Presentation Series" below that the NuClim logo and "online, 15-16 UTC" is placed. The dates are January 14, 2026 "Introduction to NuClim", January 28, 2026 "Radon-based air mass classification", February 11, 2026 "Pollution events, aerosols and clouds", February 25, 2026 "Phytoplankton and the marine carbon cycle with Paula Eisnecker", March 11, 2026 "Combining the project results".

Our fourth speaker in our presentation series is Paula Eisnecker. She is an early-career scientist at the University of the Azores working with remote sensing data to improve the understanding of local phytoplankton dynamics and their links to ocean–atmosphere CO₂ exchange. Photo: P. Eisnecker

We had our second presentation yesterday. Craig talked about radon-based greenhouse gas tracing. And the next is coming in less than two weeks: On Feb 11th Xuemeng Chen (Ava) will talk about aerosols and clouds and why we are measuring them within NuClim.
Screenshot of a video call. At the top two small camera views are seen. On the left a blond, white women in an office, she is muted. On the right a bald, white man in front of a window. He is speaking. His name is displayed as Craig Lils.
Below the videos a slide is dominantly visible. It says big "Application 1: greenhouse gas baselines" with a picture of a power plant of manufacturing plant to the right. Lots of smoke/steam is coming from the chimneys. The slide has a white background and NPL with their logo is displayed in the top right. The color of the text matches the blue of the NPL logo.
