Rot with thy author:
the history & archaeology of buried books

‘ Book burial is a narrow, neglected, but enduring thread in fiction, folklore, history, ethnography and archaeology. /---/ As book lovers know, habent sua fata libelli: books have their destinies, and sometimes it is to be buried in the earth.

The domesticity of books and their association with orderly, dry, indoor spaces makes the burial of books in the cold wet ground a fascinating and disturbing idea.’

For over 400 years, African Nova Scotians have shaped our province’s relationship with the ocean, working as shipbuilders, sailors, fishers, navigators, and harbor workers. Yet, these vital stories have too often been left out of our maritime history.

You found an old coin. Now what? In Nova Scotia, any Heritage Object belongs to the Crown. If you find something that looks old, STOP. Don't dig it up! Removing it from its "context" destroys the historical data archaeologists use to understand our past.
