It's gotten to the point where, with recent imagery, I don't really even need to find the fortified outpost to know whether a town is still under junta control; they just look totally different. Take these two neighbouring villages near Shwebo. One contains a Junta outpost, the other one is clear.

The other is the next major village (Village Tract Seat) down the road, Kan Htu Ma, which was captured by the resistance in early 2024. The difference is night-and-day. The market has grown, and it's now a major vehicle route for cars avoiding the main (junta-controlled) road.

The above images show recent satellite pictures of neighbouring villages. One is a township seat (Taze) still under Junta 'control'. I genuinely could not find a single vehicle on the road. No activity at the markets, overgrown backyards and abandoned homes. Basically deserted.

This Reddit post highlights the reorganisation of Burma's urban fabric, which deserves much more attention & research. reddit.com/r/myanmar/co... (AI translation justpaste.it/i9sz7) In so much of Burma now, the previous urban centres are basically abandoned & the smaller rural towns are bustling.

After a catastrophic decline bogong moths are back, and naturalists are celebrating
Bogong moths numbers have surged after years of decline, flying evidence of an ancient transfer of vital nutrients from lowlands to the fragile high country.

I counted 68 Bogong Moths this afternoon riding down 500m of road, and you can barely reload iNaturalist fast enough for all the records coming in... In the words of one researcher quoted this week, “I just feel so lucky. I feel like we have been blessed by the moth gods.”

Israel's GovMaps has now removed this imagery from its map platform. soaratlas.com/maps/asia-is... Here it is, in the full original resolution. The fidelity of aerial imagery really highlights the complete destruction. Thanks to @soaratlas.bsky.social for hosting the imagery.

I was honoured to lend some thoughts during this investigation, and I'm very glad it's been released. This is an unambiguous example of the need for a more structured approach.

Tech companies need a clear framework for obscuring imagery that balances security concerns with public interest. Here, Apple has clearly become a barrier to accountability.

A BBC Verify investigation found that Apple Maps' censoring of Chinese Military and Government sites has included arbitrary detention sites in Xinjiang, including the prison where Ilham Tohti is detained. Watch the investigation.

This shows the reality of Gaza in shocking resolution. I've scraped and exported all the imagery, totalling around 2.5 billion pixels at 13cm resolution, for safe keeping, in case they decide to take this imagery offline. If this happens, keep an eye out for access.

The post-coup acceleration of mangrove destruction in Myanmar's Arakan State is remarkably distressing, and now we're seeing some of the consequences, with river erosion destroying and threatening scores of riverside homes in Kyauktaw and Minbya bnionline.net/en/news/kalada…

For example, this is 12km downstream from the end of high-resolution imagery. This is the best (PlanetScope) coverage we presently have of this area. Yet still complete destruction.

Of the 4,300 structures potentially affected in this map, only around 1,000 are covered by Very High Resolution open imagery. 2,100 are covered at high resolution, and 1,100 are covered only at medium resolution.

Understandably, much of the initially released high-resolution open satellite imagery for the Nepal disaster has focused on the upper reaches of the valley, but imagery is desperately needed on the lower slopes, where the terrain has allowed the flood waters to spread more widely.

Much of the area in Timure that was destroyed was 35- 50m above the river and was still swept away by the torrent of water and mud. Absolutely apocalyptic. A lot of Gosaikunda is 25-35m above the river. Above Resuo, the torrent appears to have breached well over 100m.

Very back-of-the-envelope quick maths, but given a sun elevation of 61 degrees, casting a shadow of 70-90m (along the azimuth) on a 20% downwards slope, that would suggest the crag cliff-face left after this collapse is 110m-150m tall!

A quick correction, looking at imagery from last year, the avalanche that I thought was separate from the main rockfall is actually just where the rock sticks out of the retreating glacier normally. Here's an image from Sept 2025.

Based on AI-building footprints, around 1,200 structures have been impacted in this area (All of this should be subject to higher-resolution satellite analysis; it is hard to reconcile 30m imagery with precise structures).

Preliminary and incomplete (I will update based on new imagery) mapping shows that at least 21.9km2 has been inundated by the debris flow.

I'm not a geologist (if any read this, please share your thoughts!), but it looks as though, above the main rupture, there is an area where the ice has released off the intact rock surface, before the main rupture, where the bedrock itself failed, suggesting a compound failure.

The glacier detachment and rupture is over 1.6km across. This is likely in the hundreds of millions of cubic metres of debris, in just the initial rupture off the mountain.

Satellite imagery shows the slip scar from a glacier on the northern slope of Langtang Lirung, which collapsed & caused the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli Outburst Flood in Nepal and Tibet yesterday. A whole side of the mountain fell off and snowballed into the massive downstream tragedy.

9. 'Sawai Nala' Camp. Approx. 34.391064°N 73.449336°E google.com/maps/place/3... This is the one site that has not been presented as either a slide or a handout by the IAF, so its exact location is impossible to pinpoint; it appears to be around here. Can't say much else.

8. Masjid Subhan Allah, Bahawalpur 31.838263°N 74.259836°E google.com/maps/place/2... Post-strike photos that appear real on their face seem to show the site nearly completely destroyed, including one of the domes.

7. Masjid wa Markaz Taiba 31.838263°N 74.259836°E google.com/maps/place/3... The perimeter as mapped includes a hospital and several schools and colleges. The strike imagery is distant but appears to show a pretty much a hit on the Masjid, perhaps slightly to the north-west.

6. Kotli Butta site (health clinic?) 32.617123°N 74.505696°E google.com/maps/place/3... Google calls this a Basic Health Unit site, but with no pictures or reviews. It is not listed on HDX's health-sites database or OSM. So I'm really not sure, some sources called it a 'seminary'.

5. Terakatlan Health Clinic, Sialkot. 32.360346°N 75.124897°E google.com/maps/place/3... This location appears to be a primary health clinic. Some nationalist bloggers are claiming it was used to 'house terrorists before crossing the border'. Idk about that, it was a health clinic.

4. Masjid Abbas in Kotli 33.508495°N 73.906416°E google.com/maps/place/3... The strike-vision provided is too distant to determine the exact impact, but no reason to think it hit anything but the target.

3. Masjid Ahl-e-Hadis in Barnala, Bhimber. 32.867802°N 74.256469°E google.com/maps/place/3... Quadcopter-dropped munition appear to miss the target building and strike a courtyard around 50m away.

In total it shows around 140 structures damaged/destroyed (excluding ~330 destroyed by fire - not mapped per structure). It has around 60 high-priority rescue sites where large apartment complexes have collapsed, or gathering places (mosques, schools, monasteries etc.) have been destroyed.
