Really worth reading this one. A running theme throughout is the tension between government control and flexible crisis response - and how different structures have different limits.

It’s a really simple geometry problem, put in stark terms. Infrastructure costs scale with area served. You need to add enough revenue capacity in that area to pay for the infrastructure OR you need surplus revenue over costs somewhere else.

Of course Robert Fife is a Havana Syndrome truther. Incredible stuff here. Breaking: the government has not investigated whether the operation of a Russian newtype “psycommu” weapon was responsible for mysterious reports of “ringing noises - like a bell?” 🙄

They’ve somehow managed to wind up with a parallel but unrelated misunderstanding of supply and demand.
A screenshot of a comment from a flipper communication channel probably discord. The text reads:

“I've been flipping for the last 10 years and can tell you, this is the end of Pokemon.
When Nike started releasing too many Jordans, everyone stopped wearing them.
During covid, when Walmart started selling too many inflatable pools... everyone stopped going there. When Rae Dunn pottery became overprinted, all the white women stopped buying. Over printing is the sign of a failing business, and Pokemon is on its last legs. As for me, I'm going to try and return all this inventory. It's useless and no one is buying. Plan on shifting to reselling power tools next. Extremely untapped market and builders have infinite money.”

It was also in his budget survey and was clearly one of those “haha you don’t actually mean that” items since naturally there’s absolutely no way a new bypass highway would be subjected to this standard.

www.cbc.ca/news/livesto... Yeah you know I’m not sure most Canadians would say that suggestion/ that Trump trade talks aren’t completely dead in the water are “glimmers”. More like “dire omens”. But here’s Mike Crawley from CBC’s capitulation desk trying to gin up that narrative.
A snippet of the CBC trade live feed, text reads:

“There's a call scheduled today between U.S.
Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and U.S.-Canada Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc.
However, Canadian officials expect the conversation will be largely about how the U.S. intends to respond to today's Canadian retaliation, a source familiar with the discussions told Radio-Canada.

While Canada needs to brace for the possibility that the response will mean even more U.S. tariffs, there are a couple of glimmers suggesting talks are not completely dead in the water.

The source also said Canada expects Greer and LeBlanc to discuss "next steps" today.

There were several informal exchanges between the two over the weekend, another source told Radio-Canada.”

Replacing the structure from the 2013 street view with the structure from the 2017 street view took five years, and ultimately occurred only after a court ruling that the city could not block it.

Clearly a play cow, which is really a goat
A spread from Robert Munsch’s Playhouse. The text on the left reads:

"No problem," said Rene. "How about you give me a goat and paint it so it looks like a cow, and then I will have a play cow!" So Rene's father got her a goat and painted it so it looked like a cow. Rene put her play cow, which was really a goat, in the play barn, and she felt like she had a farm of her own - but not quite.

On the right is an illustration by Michael Martchenko of Renee’s father, a bearded white man in jeans and a sweater with a baseball cap, painting black dots on a white goat. Renee, a small girl, looks on. In the background is a barn, and some chickens and a rooster engaged in shenanigans

[citation needed] www.aar.org/wp-content/u... (AAR is philosophically opposed to non-diesel electric motive power, so this can be considered a worst case scenario, possibly to a hilarious degree. Canada would be a tiny fraction of this cost.)
A screenshot of the executive summary from the linked report which concludes:

Catenary electrification of the Class / railroad network across the U.S. and Canada is estimated to cost between $870 billion and $1.1 trillion.

For comparison, the six Class I railroads generated approximately $24 billion of combined net income in 2023.

I see you and raise you the seventh circle
A humble arterial surface road in Rohnert Park and/or Cotati, California. Three lanes of traffic arrive at a four-way stop; one lane turns left, on the other side one of the two straight lanes immediately vanishes. A similar two straight plus one left arrangement occurs on the other side. The cross streets are just one lane each way but all four are absolute units.

Oh yeah and there’s crosswalks too. It’s an intersection that’s basically designed to kill people
