We are dismayed to hear that Tim Houston’s PC Government returned $5 million in federal funding earmarked to protect nature areas in our province. On our current trajectory NS will fall short of our commitments to the federal government to protect 20% of its lands by 2030.

Unfortunately, years of underfunding by the governing PCs and previous Liberal government have resulted in several rural library branches closing and/or significantly reducing their open hours. This is incredibly short-sighted and downplays the roles libraries play in the province.

When the biggest parties can quietly agree to weaken privacy rules for themselves, something is broken. That is not healthy competition, it is concentrated power. Proportional representation would force real scrutiny and make backroom alignment much riskier.
Graphic with a gradient background in warm orange and purple tones. Top text reads: “First-past-the-post concentrates power in a few dominant parties, making self serving rule changes easier to coordinate.” In the centre is a screenshot style box featuring a Toronto Star opinion headline: “Could Canada’s major political parties all agree on anything worse than this?” with a subheading explaining that an amendment to the Canada Elections Act would allow federal political parties to set their own privacy rules. Below the screenshot, bold text reads: “Proportional representation would diversify Parliament and give members real paths to join or form new parties if transparency is lacking, making rule changes harder to pass without real debate.” At the bottom it says: “Learn more at fairvote.ca.”
