At least after some time, it all comes down to trust and boundaries and all the basics tbh. If the person stops being safe, the whole rewiring goes away, so maybe it's less ego and more a matter of vulnerability? At least that's what's happened to me before, so maybe it helps you out somehow!

For me at least it all comes down to the person, the intent and communication, if someone uses "cute" I tend to interpret it as condescending, but if you have someone to talk this through, they express their intent and assure you they aren't demeaning you, the bad feeling tends to go away
