Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 19hAhasverus advena, scuttling on the bookshelf this afternoon. “The Foreign Grain Beetle” little chap at just over 2 mm. #Coleoptera #Silvanidae #Beetle #Derbyshire 020
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Mycology definitely not my strong point. Experts out there what are these beasts? About the size of a dinner plate, I believe they’re feeding of roots of dead laurel. @britmycolsoc.org.uk 160
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 07/10/2026This is just one of many. They all look the same but several species hiding amongst this lot. 010

Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 25/09/2026It is and although not recorded from Notts surprisingly turns up at several locations I’ve surveyed in the last few years. Always wondered how the wingless females find isolated areas that contain tiger beetles, and that didn’t previously have tiger beetle present. 000
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Female Methocha articulata a predator of Tiger beetle larvae. Pitfall trapped from area of restored colliery spoil, Nottinghamshire. #Hymenoptera #Coleoptera #Nottinghamshire #Wasp 2162
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 24/09/2026That’s exactly what I aim to try and do, my last garden was too spring orientated. Going to try to make sure this has something throughout the spring through till autumn. Sadly still lacking in garden birds, but several species observed. 110
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 24/09/2026My seven year old granddaughter found this in the air vent of their imported Toyota. Educated guess but think it’s Protaetia orientalis, the Oriental Flower Beetle. Not one I was expecting in North-east Derbyshire. #Cetoniinae #Coleoptera #Scarabaeidae 0120
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 24/09/2026It happened to be my first garden spider as well. It had made its web on Patrinia scabiosifolia (flies love it). Nice to have a very blank canvas, every plant has to have a purpose for insects, doesn’t have to be native just attractive to them. 120
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Totally agree, but I still got a little annoyed. 130

Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Field Pansy, Viola arvensis, making a welcome appearance in my garden after a bit of soil disturbance. I reckon people would travel for miles to see this plant if it was rare. Luckily it’s not. @bsbibotany.bsky.social 2311

Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Chicken of the Woods, Laetiporus sulphureus, unusually growing out of the ground, no sign of where a tree used to be but presuming rotting roots just under the surface. #Fungi 030

Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 15/08/2026These I survey are now choked with Phragmites. NRW clear them every now and then but they’re definitely not in tip top condition. 000
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 15/08/2026Spot on, not many of the reens I now survey have the right profile, they’re now too steeply sided but still enough to keep me going back. 121
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 15/08/2026I do an annual survey of several Reens and Ditches in South Wales, a small job I’ve kept on since retirement. Both Dytiscus dimidiatus and Hydaticus transversalis had been missing for several years until this year when they made an appearance once more. #Coleoptera #Dytiscidae 3195
Reposted by Adrian DuttonAdrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Hydaticus transversalis from a rather polluted ditch just outside of Cardiff. Strangely several species of scarce water beetles found over last three days but not a single Agabinae or even the ubiquitous Hydroporus palustris. Hot summers, strange times. #Coleoptera #Dytiscidae 0102

Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 09/08/2026And I can remember a couple of wheat fields where after the harvest they used to have over a dozen Grey Heron feeding on Harvest Mice. No longer the case. Harvest mice now rather scarce here in the East Midlands. 020
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 08/08/2026No plants in the garden I’ve moved into. Therefore dig a bed and get some in. They don’t have to be native to UK but do have to have insect appeal. Four days from planting and here’s a couple of early results. #Lepidoptera #Syrphidae 4284
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 06/08/2026Yes rather common in my new unplanted garden. Its a very fast bug. 120

Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 25/07/2026Difficult to get a “proper” bitter now with all this American and citra hopped beers. I don’t mind them but prefer a darker beer unless it’s Doom Bar which is always a shocking drink. As for mild, my local in the late 70’s early 80’s if you drunk bitter they looked at you as if you were odd. 000
Adrian Dutton @nottscoleoptera.bsky.social · 25/07/2026I was a Shipstones drinker myself. Currently drinking Abbeydale Moonshine in Tupton Tap, I’ve migrated from Notts to Derbyshire! Now got the Eastern Moors as my new patch. 100
