Book 29 of 2026: A Violent Mastepiece by @jordanharper.bsky.social. This book is beautifully written. I love the prose style, especially how each POV character is different enough that I could tell who it is, even without the chapter titles. Also, this book is bleak as hell for so many pages.

Like voter fraud, there is no sharia law in the USA nor is there any threat of it. The only people committing voter fraud and instituting religious laws are Republican.

What if the plan is to drive prices up now, so the week before the mid-terms, prices can drop an insignificant amount. But they can say, “Look things are cheaper than last week, we did it!”

Book 28 of 2026: The Dark Tower by @stephenking.bsky.social. I always find myself wanting to stop near the end of this one. I think partly, I just want to stay in that world for a while longer. Partly, I don’t love the section just before the end. But the ending itself is pretty much prefect.

I was asleep, having worked until about 3am. My roommate woke me up saying a plane just crashed in NYC. We didn’t have cable, so we were listening on the radio. When we found a OTA channel, we watched and saw a replay of the second plane. We were the most silent 5 20-something men can be.

I’m a couple years behind, but I finally watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. IMO, the final 20 minutes makes up for the meh rest of the movie. The Delores storyline was also totally unnecessary. Other than that last bit, Catherine O’Hara carried the movie like Atlas (or a turtle) carries the world.

Book 27 of 2026: Buffalo Soldie by @mauricebroaddus.bsky.social. I wish the book were at least 200 pages longer. I loved this novella. I’m intrigued by Desmond and want to know more about Lij and the Nations. I want more about all of it. The politics, the history, and the stories.

Book 26 of 2026: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (I don’t think he’s on Bluesky). I almost put this book down in the first few chapters because I found the protagonist pretty annoying, and the characters to be thing and their conversations too jokey. DON’T TO IT! This books really takes off (ha).

Book 25 of 2026: Artificial Truth by JM Lee. I don’t read a lot of translated books, and this one is an example of why. I enjoyed the premise, but the prose didn’t catch me. The idea of multiple unreliable narrators is interesting, but somehow, I didn’t catch it until the final pages. My fault.

Book 23 of 2026: The Boys are Back in Town by @cgolden.bsky.social. I read this almost exactly 20 years ago, right before my 10th HS reunion. It was the perfect book for the time then, and just as good now, not long before my 30th reunion (not attending, if it’s even happening).

Book 22 of 2026: Carry Me to My Grave by @cgolden.bsky.social. Oh man, the last 3 Golden books (not those) released have been absolutely fantastic, wild rides that start on the first page and just keep the gas down to the end. Kids with mommy issues, and a mommy with undead issues. Sibling rivalry

@scalzi.com trying to explain “the failure mode of clever is ‘asshole.’” to a 4 year old is difficult b/c: 1. It’s a little less effective when you not trying to teach her to swear. 2. She really thought what she said to her brother was funny. 3. She doesn’t understand that she was being mean. 1/2

Book 21 of 2026: Wolves of the Calla by @stephenking.bsky.social. The fifth book of the Dark Tower series is always different to me. It isn’t only because I’m listening to audio and this where the narrator switches to George Guidall. I think he does fine, I even kind of prefer his voice for Roland.

1 more reason to drop everything Meta related. You don’t even need an imagination for a bedtime story, just try to remember one from your own childhood. If you truly can’t come up with something, there are libraries. If you can’t go there, try imaginationlibrary.com. Dolly will send you books.

When I worked at a bookstore, l learned that when an author like Dean Koontz signs his books, their resale value goes up.
I also learned that when an author like Stephen King signs Dean Koontz's books, the price goes even higher and that Dean Koontz is not amused by this.

My 7 year old just buried a dragonfly on the beach. He made it a little shell coffin and dug a hole, then solemnly covered it up. He’d found it earlier in the pool and tried to dry it out, so it could fly away. We looked up how long they live, and he decided this one had lived its 42 days.
