I think human beings just aren’t built for a perfect society. Mostly because “perfect” is individual. What I want isn’t the same as others.

Decades ago, I wrote a college essay on Utopia as Dystopia. I barely remember my argument at this point, but could probably come up with a few if I re-read it. Iirc, I pulled in some Walden Two by Skinner, as further examples.

NEW @stephenking.bsky.social BOOK DAY!! I’ve been looking forward for this book since rumors of its existence. I read the Talisman & Black House. I listened to TDT for the 19th time. My copy is being delivered as we speak. I’m not home for a few more days. :(

Those might have been a different party, in a different time, but taking advantage of the working class all the same. Do your damn job, actually try to help people, and you won’t need to buy their vote. They’ll vote for you because you actually cared and worked in their best interest.

My grandparents used to tell me stories of elections in WV. Folks sitting on the tailgates of pickup trucks in the most rural coal mining towns, handing completed ballots then bottles of liquor for blank ballots, when folks came out. Filling those out, then handing that to the next person.

For some reason, I keep getting texts that mention my father-in-law’s name, and his house in another state. Either about mortgage refinancing or power washing. Block and report spam is my go to.

Thanks for this! I’m not a huge country fan, but I like to have something actually good in back pocket when people start talking about Morgan Wallen. This seems right up my alley.

Maybe it’s a comment on the current state of our world, and the fact that fighting against the current regime feels so hopeless at times. The class divisions in this book parallel how the world is seems right now. Maybe, right now, I need my books to be more of an escape than a reflection.

There were times that I didn’t know if I could continue, and I had to put it down for days at a time. I think that says more about where I am in my own headspace than the book itself. I generllay don’t have issues with bleak or dark books. (Check out my past reads for example.)

Book 29 of 2026: A Violent Mastepiece by @jordanharper.bsky.social. This book is beautifully written. I love the prose style, especially how each POV character is different enough that I could tell who it is, even without the chapter titles. Also, this book is bleak as hell for so many pages.

Like voter fraud, there is no sharia law in the USA nor is there any threat of it. The only people committing voter fraud and instituting religious laws are Republican.

What if the plan is to drive prices up now, so the week before the mid-terms, prices can drop an insignificant amount. But they can say, “Look things are cheaper than last week, we did it!”

It’s been a long long time since I read SIMS, I’m going to have to revisit it. Side note: This is the first book I ever had signed by the author. He spoke at a meeting I attended when I was a manager at Waldenbooks.

The scene before the Coda and the Coda itself are what I came here for. I can’t say much more without spoiling. But this book always makes me want to start over. Go back and find these friends again. Ka is wheel. Say “Thank ya.”

Book 28 of 2026: The Dark Tower by @stephenking.bsky.social. I always find myself wanting to stop near the end of this one. I think partly, I just want to stay in that world for a while longer. Partly, I don’t love the section just before the end. But the ending itself is pretty much prefect.

I started my son on some Encyclopedia Brown books. We’ve had to have a few conversations about terms that were used in the 60s that are appropriate today, and there were a lot of people shooting guns in this books.

I haven’t read any DCC, yet. It’s on the list of things to check out, probably in audio format. I’ve started buying copies Hitchhiker’s whenever I see it cheap at used shops and putting them in Little Free Libraries. That book sparked my love of sci-fi, and absurd humor.

I was asleep, having worked until about 3am. My roommate woke me up saying a plane just crashed in NYC. We didn’t have cable, so we were listening on the radio. When we found a OTA channel, we watched and saw a replay of the second plane. We were the most silent 5 20-something men can be.

Neil Gaiman hurt because his prose his so beautiful. HP is sad bc it was so formative and created so many readers. But if Stephen King ends up on one of these lists, I may lose it. And if i ever find that Scalzi commits more than burrito atrocities, I don’t know what I’ll do.

I had the same experience. I always wanted a sports car, then I drove one for a few days as a rental and wasn’t a fan of how little I could see. Sure, I could pass at high speeds, but then I couldn’t see if the lane was empty to get back over for my exit. Not a daily driver for me.

Hopefully it’s mostly the opposite of survival bias, and we mostly hear about the horrible people. The moral, successful folks just fly under the radar. Maybe they shouldn’t. We should celebrate them.

I also just realized I have NEVER heard the original lyrics to MacArthur Park before. Only Weird Al’s Jurassic Park parody. I thought the movie was another parody version, it fits, so well. Btw: what really sold me on parody was the “striped pants” line.

I’m a couple years behind, but I finally watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. IMO, the final 20 minutes makes up for the meh rest of the movie. The Delores storyline was also totally unnecessary. Other than that last bit, Catherine O’Hara carried the movie like Atlas (or a turtle) carries the world.

Book 27 of 2026: Buffalo Soldie by @mauricebroaddus.bsky.social. I wish the book were at least 200 pages longer. I loved this novella. I’m intrigued by Desmond and want to know more about Lij and the Nations. I want more about all of it. The politics, the history, and the stories.

I really loved this book. The main character really grew on me, and while many other character were still thin, they don’t matter so much. Without spoiling anything, the 2 main characters end up amazing and perfect. Please read this book.

Book 26 of 2026: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (I don’t think he’s on Bluesky). I almost put this book down in the first few chapters because I found the protagonist pretty annoying, and the characters to be thing and their conversations too jokey. DON’T TO IT! This books really takes off (ha).

I chose this book because of the AI plot, and that was probably my favorite part, even if I don’t necessarily think the advances made here should ever actually happen. (Maybe that was the point of the book.) Unfortunately, as the book went on, I found myself caring less about the characters.

Book 25 of 2026: Artificial Truth by JM Lee. I don’t read a lot of translated books, and this one is an example of why. I enjoyed the premise, but the prose didn’t catch me. The idea of multiple unreliable narrators is interesting, but somehow, I didn’t catch it until the final pages. My fault.

Ted Lasso always makes me feel pretty good about the world. If a show about a guy that is just so nice can have such a huge audience, maybe we’re not completely screwed. I identify with the meme, “I wish I like Ted, but I more like Roy,” though. Ted makes me want to be better.
