Our dusk last night was both magical and deeply unsettling for about 10 minutes. The clouds radiated with a warm, ethereal orange that completely changed the appearance of everything- including the otherwise brilliantly green spring trees. . Golden Hour III 12”x12” Oil on cradled wood panel

Monet’s easels were custom-built to withstand wind. He sometimes tied them to stakes or trees to keep them from flying away

In 1873, the art dealer Goupil & Cie sent 20-year-old Van Gogh to their London branch. He was left him lonely and adrift. His path began to shift from selling art to creating it.

In 1887 at Asnières-sur-Seine, Van Gogh painted bridges and factories with Pointillist dots and dashes to capture reflections on the Seine. He sought to show industry and leisure sharing the same spaces of modern life.

Monet rarely mixed colors on his palette. Instead, he set pure hues side by side, allowing the viewer’s eyes to do the mixing.

Monet sometimes painted reflections first—upside down—then added the object above. Critic Séverin Faust called it a “new logic of vision.” 🔄

On July 27, 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in a wheatfield near Auvers. He walked back to his inn and died two days later, whispering, “La tristesse durera toujours”—the sadness will last forever.

At 82, Monet learned he had cataracts. He wrote: “I realized with terror that I could see nothing with my right eye.” After three surgeries, his colors shifted—fiery reds and yellows dominate his late works. What he lost in sight, he gained in vision.

Here's a quite large pastel drawing done sitting on the river bank at Byron's Pool, Trumpington Cambridge. Byron is said to have swum here. Perhaps his anarchic spirit was at work. #art #lordbyron #pastel #byronspool
A large plein air pastel from a few years ago, done from the banks of the river at Byron's Pool, Trumpington (a local nature reserve). This is in soft pastel as opposed to oil pastel. I think I went a little wild with this one.

suspecting another advantage to viewing sin as bondage is that it reveals its structure a structure that a purely moral view (perhaps deliberately) keeps hidden by seeing sin as vice which focuses attention on the sinner, away from the conditions that make particular sins possible

During his stay in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, Van Gogh painted Irises. Blue petals swirl around a single white bloom, repetition giving way to individuality. Order and impulse find harmony in brushstroke and color.

"Trees Mirrored in a Pond" by Egon Schiele captures a tranquil landscape where rippling water reflects the vibrant colors of surrounding trees. Painted in 1907, this work contrasts Schiele's more famous expressionistic portraits with its serene natural scenery.

Monet’s Camille on Her Deathbed (1879) was never shown publicly in his lifetime. He kept it hidden in his Giverny studio, seen only by family and close friends. After his death in 1926, it passed through his estate—today it hangs in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. 💔

In the 1860s, Monet and Renoir shared lodging in the countryside. Struggling financially, they planted potatoes and lived off the crop. While the Paris Salon rejected their art, they survived—painting by day, digging by night.
