I'm very please to announce a public release of my drag-and-drop bookmarking, game-making, and wandering tool Scrubjay! Scrubjay is a weird website builder that lets you cobble together web elements, images, links, text fragments, etc into a series of nested rooms...
"SCRUBJAY" sits over a bunch of images of frogs, birds, doors. it's a very 90s look

and I mean Cusk’s to be clear not the poor subject, the victim of the weirdest projection over the course of an entire novel. the npr review I skimmed feels more and more accurate. In trying to “reveal” something about this famous person, it feels like Cusk is just revealing her own sad worldview.

I genuinely enjoyed on a basic level but that also had moments of similar stunning insight in perfectly constructed sentences. I’m slowly trying to catch up with Oakland Review of Books stuff, and this got me on the Balle train. www.oaklandreviewofbooks.org/maybe-it-wil...

me grimacing at the odd equivalencies she’s seeming to make, but then astounded by how plainly she’s stated something so sharp and insightful. Dizzying. Not convinced it’s good yet, and maybe being unfairly harmed by it’s proximity to me finishing book one of On the Calculation of Volume, a book

The new Rachel Cusk novel is deeply bizarre and I’m only like ten pages in. Outline is maybe my favorite novel? top 5 for sure, whole trilogy is great imo, but everything after has mostly been a mild to medium disappointment. Life of M starts with such wildly swinging paragraphs, moving from

A tapestry loom warped with white cotton thread. There is a small rectangle weaving consisting of a background of deep green, a yellow square in the middle, and two lighter greens as stripes crossing over the background and the yellow square. every few days I wonder why I keep this account going, but hey, here's some garden pics. it's taken three years to figure out how to grow well in this miserable intense heat hell hole, but I'm finally getting enough veggies that it is actively impacting my grocery budget in a positive way. woo.
Three small eggplants, a cross between black beauty and the long skinny asian eggplants. And 7 stalks of white chard. All harvested from a raised bed garden.A grey metal raised bed, with a large net structure surrounding it. The netting has been opened to the side on the left and right like a stage play curtain. There are two different eggplant varieties, three tomatoes, and four shishito plants alongside some chard, some basil some garlic chives and a few arugula and pak choi plants.

trying to really embrace the experiment of this project, just committing to something each month, what matters is finishing the design, doing the work of weaving, not that each month is my favorite. but man are those blues nice. Just wish I was doing them a bit more justice.

kind of hate April’s so far, but went in without a plan intentionally, trying to find balance between planned/sketched/sampled vs intuitive weaving at the loom. went too far in one direction. But it’s really nice, thin yarn, weaver’s bazaar from the UK wish I could get more, play with bundling more
Close up of a tapestry in progress. On the bottom is a black tapestry with a red long thin horizontal shape. Brown yarn marks the space between two designs. The top design is in progress, with various blues and grays bundle together and lighter colors forming stripes and rectangles.

My garden seems happy, we’ve had more rain this last week than the entire last few months.
Close up of a yellow Cherokee purple tomato flower on a green tomato plant branch. Close up of two white shishito pepper flowers on bright green pepper plants. A very fuzzy Italian mini eggplant plant with three flowers forming. The plant is attached to a dark green plant stake. A picture of a happy garden in a grey raised bed. There are three tomato plants visible, two eggplants, some shishito peppers, radishes, and an assortment of greens and herbs as well. The garden is surrounded by a large netted structure with the netting open at the time of the photo.

I really miss walking to my community garden plot in my beautiful neighborhood taking detailed photos of flowers.
A flowe with scraggly petals around a brown center, the petals are red near the center changing to yellow at the tips. A small rose like bud in a reddish pink with white edges on a few petals, barely starting to expand into the full flower. A deep dark black velvet textured flower in bright sun. A striking red flower with some faint yellow in the center and green leaves and grass in the background.

just a lot of moving parts here! Zones of control, movement rules, needing to stay in supply. A like six step process for each combat. I am sad to say for my bank accounts sake though that even this early there is something deeply satisfying already about the narrative that can come from counters

It took awhile to parse the set up rules and I’m still not clear if I marked all the cities correctly and found three “initial setup” photos on bgg that all had slight differences lol. And I have only finished a single activation, for one of the sides, which did help me practice combat. But there’s

I play heavy board games so this should not be intimidating. AND YET. This is really not even that complicated as hex and counter goes but it’s such a different beast, with different aims and incentives. After 2x through the rules I realized I just needed to set it up and start moving things around!

yesterday i planted my garden, and today my quads hurt. I think three years in I am finally starting to understand the bizarre texas split season. A race from March to early June. Keep stuff alive through hell season, then in late August you get a garden again.

had to reweave this very simple looking red thing so many goddamn times but I think I got somewhere close to what was in my head, March tapestry diary almost halfway done.
A close up shot of an in progress tapestry the bottom is yellow and a thin brown wove line separates the yellow from a solid black section with a red shape woven in the black, a long horizontal shape with slightly tapered ends.

and some more, what a fun little thing.
Odd small green creatures with round heads and large eyes on smaller tan and green bodies. They are cups from a candy store and some of them have Port Aransas, TX printed on them. Mugs consisting of 3d breasts in bikini tops, both light blue and black. The mugs are stacked on each other, say Port Aransas, TX, and above them in the background is a sign saying “Men’s Corner”. A large fiberglass sculpture of Mario from the Mario video games, and specifically from Mario Sunshine, with his hands on the controls for the water backpack. His head is oversized and his eyes are still somehow too big for his oversized face. Three tables at a candy shop, with seats surrounding them that look like sugar cones for ice cream, with yellow, green or pink ice cream swirls cut so that they are seatbacks.

this post is mostly for @jessrock.bsky.social but I am still loving my charmera and am so thankful you posted about it, recent things.
a white house in the foreground, and plant covered sand dunes in the background in front of a beach in texas, with waves and a blown out sunny sky, taken with a toy camera. a toy camera photo of rocks in the foreground in front of small waves coming in on a beach a toy camera image with washed out color and too bright light from the sun, the sandy beach in the foreground with seaweed scattered around, and small waves coming in on the water. A very large shark with its mouth open made of unknown materials. The mouth is large enough for adults to walk into, and the body serves as a hallway up to a t shirt and souvenir shop at a texas beach.

derisively as simple or easy or whatever. clean lines, simple color blocks, concrete boxes in the wide open plains of texas, etc etc. but am oddly afraid to make very simple stripped down weavings. its very hard to make something so simple that has impact in the way I want/admire

having trouble starting march because I am feeling like I want to just weave a plain black rectangle and that feels a little too on the nose for how I am feeling about most things, but inserting some yellow or white or something bright also feels wrong. I love art that people often describe

january and february successfully woven on the tapestry diary before the end of each month, moving through mud but we get things done, some things
a 6” by 3” tapestry woven in yellow, with a blue stripe with black and red. a small white rectangle at the end of the stripe. a 6” x 3” tapestry with a dark blue and back background. The center consists of three rectangles of white, in three sizes smallest on the left, middle twice as wide as the left most, rightmost twice as wide as the middle. In the center of the white rectangles is a shape resembling a slightly abstracted stick or tree in winter depending on its orientation, woven in brown.

my promise to myself is, if i keep up with my tapestry diary for six months i can use the money Im setting aside each month to order the yarn i need to make this idea into a roughly 8” by 11” tapestry. so sampling and iterating till summer is the plan.

the basic idea is a page from a notebook like the field notes notebook that lives in my bag, but all the text is smudged blurry blocks of indecipherable nothing. sometimes you try to make sense of things but its all just a mess of blurry thoughts.

spent a lot of today trying to make sense of a tapestry I’ve been thinking about for many months. not sure I fully figured it out, but progress I think.
a small wooden tapestry peg loom with white gray and black yarn. various papers both printer paper and tracing paper with sketched design ideas for a tapestry. tracing paper and a grid notebook open on a wooden desktop with a pencil and a circular sewing tape measure on the notebook. the papers all have various sketches for tapestry designs.
