Today I'm fettling more ceramic figurines for @pottedhistory.bsky.social and @potsofhistory.bsky.social These little Venus statuettes were the "must have" item for the Roman household, as they were goddesses of love, sex, beauty and fertility.

Hands up if you can guess what I'm doing today! (I'm giving @pottedhistory.bsky.social and @potsofhistory.bsky.social a helping hand by fettling up some new figurines. But I can't show you the finished result as they're top secret for now!!)

I hadn't really ever thought about the basic Lesotho diet being vegan. This relish is typically eaten with maize meal porrige (pap) and morogo (cooked greens). That said, if people can afford meat they do generally eat it too.

A slippery slope!!

Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
A surprising hill to die on. But probably best for all concerned.

Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Yes it is... In Lesotho it's very often an accompaniment to Pap (a stiff maize meal "porrige") and morogo (mixed green leaves- spinach, pumpkin leaf, swiss chard, good-king-henry- cooked with fried onions , chopped tomatoes and possibly potato- all of which is vegan and delicious.

That makes sense, but no. In South Africa traffic lights are called "robots". So robot peppers are the triple packs of peppers containing a red, yellow and green one.

Three jars of spicy, delicious chakalaka are cooling in my kitchen. I used an authentic South African recipe and had to smile at one of the ingredients "robot peppers". Care to take a guess at what that means?? If you've not been there, you're unlikely to get it right!!

We spent 20 years in Lesotho in southern Africa. Even things like pies- which make no mention of being spicy- will usually include lots of chilli. (South Africa is the origin of Nandos for good reason!)

Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Likewise. My husband had one that was so hot he thought he was going into anaphylactic shock (and he loves a really hot spicy meal).
120
Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It is. Though never having actually made it before- having always bought ready made commercially available versions, it may take some experimentation.

Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's an African favourite in southern African countries. Cooked vegetables- peppers, chillis, carrots, tomatoes etc cooked down to almost into a sauce and served cold with BBQ foods.

Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I'm going to use some of my chillis to make the South African relish chakalaka. Stand well back, these chillis are unpredictable in their Scoville ratings!

Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
That's a new variety to me (here in the UK). I've got 3 different types in my pic- Padrons, Fresno and Fire Basket. They are surprisingly varied in their hotness. Some of the "mild" padrons have been hotter than the "hot" ones!!
110
Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
They look very decorative when strung up! What variety are yours?

Northumberart @northumberart.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's a gardening day for me today. Time to cut things back and tidy things up. I've three different varieties of chillis ready for making into sauce or to freeze.

Today's painting is of autumnal trees on the banks of the River Coquet, at The Thrum. The afternoon light there always illuminates that field, giving a striking contrast to the shadowy trees. #Rothbury #Northumberland

Yesterday, one of my customers told me how much they enjoy seeing the stages involved in creating one of my paintings. They likened it to building... which seems surprisingly apt. No AI involved here- but process, process, process.

As we enter the age of AI , here's a reminder that actual human artists the world round are working through a whole creative process to create original paintings. If you want art with soul, you need to buy from a real person.

My mum used to warm pennies, or bake chestnuts to slip inside my mitts to keep my hands warm for the mile long walk to school. Our school bottles of milk would have to be defrosted ontop of the old radiators in the classroom. If we got cold, the teacher had us all do star jumps to warm us up!

One of the things I wanted to do for my 70th birthday was to visit Whitby Abbey. So @pottedhistory and I went there today. Now we've just watched the most amazingly bright double rainbow over it.

My dad had a sand and gravel quarry that he was unable to work during the snow. One day he took me with him, when he went to check things at the quarry. He had to wade through thigh deep snow. Being small, I was able to walk ontop of the thick icy crust on the surface of the snow. It was amazing!

I remember that winter very clearly. It seemed magical and wonderful as a child... My brother and I built an igloo in our yard. It froze solid with an ice layer inside. We could sit inside on an old wooden sledge covered in a blanket and had a candle to give us light.

Today someone expressed surprise (in a pleasant way you understand) that I'm still painting at 70 years old. So naturally I reminded them that the famous USA artist, Grandma Moses only STARTED her painting career at 78. And that old artists never die, they merely lose their sense of perspective.😉

The ivy outside @pottedhistory.bsky.social and @potsofhistory.bsky.social 's workshop is amazing at this time of year. The tiny flowers attract hundreds of bees of various species, plus hover flies, butterflies and all manner of other insects. Its an absolute joy to watch how busy it is.

Oh my!!! That mother needs to stop viewing her son as an extension of herself NOW and concentrate on her own future. The son will make mistakes, but that's how we learn to be independant adults, taking responsibility for our own actions- or inactions! She ought to have been teaching him this.
