Haha, well, if Ms B*denoch doesn’t count that as sufficient commitment to Blighty, you can always fall back on being 1/4 Mancunian (which I’d argue is another identity in itself 🐝)

Interesting family history, Lou! his Englishness was clearly still valued on the other side of the Atlantic, so he was showing his commitment to the people, just elsewhere

Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
That makes you part Mancunian then, ‘r kid! 😉🐝

To her, Britishness is about a “commitment to a country and the people in it”- they’d surely have fulfilled that requirement before departing ‘Beloved Blighty’

My old boss has asked me to give his new book a social media bump, because he has wisely chosen never to set up his own account! So I’m happy to announce that ‘Britain’s Slave Traders: A Hidden History’ is available today in all good bookshops! www.penguin.co.uk/books/460026...

Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Yes! There are so many places that have links to slavery, it’s impossible to formulate a comprehensive list that includes all of them within the character limit. My research focuses on Manchester’s links to slavery, which seems to have caused a bit of an uproar (see previous posts). Hence this post
000
Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Of course - but they have the more obvious links to slavery that people tend to know about. My point was about (most) inner cities that people think are completely innocent, but actually have more links to slavery than they realise.

Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Exactly that! 🤦🏻‍♀️ And “you might find my comment challenging” Erm, I don’t - what now?
010
Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
I think that’s probably the best way to go about it. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before though, and it all seems a bit loud. But I know this is the harsh reality for most Global Majority academics, because there’s nothing that will actually stop this.

Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
She deleted her original comment which was “maybe you should focus on Islamic slavery and the fact that it’s still ongoing!” She assumed I’m a Muslim right off the bat (I’m not), but when I corrected her about modern slavery, she continued with her Islamophobic agenda.

Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
That’s exactly it 🙄 ‘Where are you from?’ followed by ‘no, where is your family from?’ when they don’t get the answer they were expecting. I play with it now, and say I’m from Manchester (which is true). They’ll try and push for an alternative answer, but there isn’t really one.

It’s actually the second time he’s asked me that! I didn’t answer thr first time round either so I know exactly why he’s asking it.

Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
At first, I thought that it was just me being academically challenged by another alleged academic (which I do welcome!) But that’s twice now he’s asked me where my grandparents are from, and twice where I’ve refused to answer. I’m a born and raised Mancunian, but clearly that’s not enough 👀

Thanks, Matt! I’m definitely going to keep pushing, even when it feels like I’m banging my head against a brick wall! I just hope that, somewhere along the way, I can make space for people like me too.

I’ve also been told constantly that book publishers look at your following🙃🙃 but I’m yet to see a working-class historian go viral
000
Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
I’m a Global Majority historian who is a working-class northerner. I’m TIRED of the lack of representation in academia and broadcasting media. I wanna do a PhD. I wanna write a book. I want to be a presenter. And having that following opens doors, but at what cost?
170
Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
There are so many layers to this! I have to speak out about things, and I’ll always be my authentic self irl and online. But it’s depressing when I’m trying to cut through the noise, and the historians getting traction on socials are white upper-class individuals (mostly women) 🙃

Noor Hashmi (she/her) @noorhashmi.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
I never want to be known as a History influencer or content creator…ever. I’m a historian. But my following has taken a massive hit since I spoke about Jason Arday publicly. And I’m honestly okay with that. I won’t compromise my morals or values in exchange for a mass following and brand deals 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m not cut out for the cool History content creator/influencer life. I can’t let things lie and will challenge everything, especially where racism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia etc is concerned. I’ll never be one who stands back and doesn’t call out genocides.

Oh, and enjoy the blooper halfway through the video! I resisted editing it out. My dad thinks people are sick of slick videos with the rise of AI slop. So... I kept it in for comic relief, and to show ... I'm really not at all polished on camera. 😂

Growing up, we were constantly told that “Wikipedia is not a reliable source” and “You can’t believe everything you read online!” How did everyone go from that to using Artificial Insanity?! 🤦🏻‍♀️
