Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Yep. And this infantilization is part of the abuse too. My parents are in so deep that they're unable to treat me like a whole human being. They never intended to, why would they? I was supposed to fit their mold. When I divorced my abusive husband, they left our wedding photo up on their wall. 🙃 171
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Yep. The moment parents make a choice *they* don't like, such as supporting their trans kids, the facade goes out the window. 051
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Thank you! So often us homeschool alum are ignored, but there's people who might listen to the point of view of a homeschool parent saying the same things. And thank you for doing what's best for your son. That's what's most important. 1111
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Exactly. And when we read them, I knew I was the kid. And my parents knew their role too. They occasionally referenced a passage in Deuteronomy telling parents to have their disobedient children stoned to death. I was very obedient and walked right into an abusive marriage as a result. 160

Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026No one checked up on us. We only had to send in an annual standardized test, that my mom proctored. And if they took the religious exemption she wouldn't have even had to do that. And I was in one of the more regulated states. Children have essentially no rights and no safety net. 1382
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026There's a Bible story - Abraham almost kills his son because God says to, and only stops because God then tells him not to. I knew, as a kid, that my parents could have *thought* they heard something from God and disappeared me and no one would have ever known, because I was homeschooled in the US. 2512

Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Mmhmm! "All men are created equal," -Thomas Jefferson, who held men, women, and children in forced labor and sexual slavery. What makes the modern usage particularly hypocritical, imo (because they do fuckin love hierarchy) is that they switch definitions depending on the situation. 0100
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 23/08/2026They vary their definition depending on whether or not they want to overtly agree with what someone is doing with their freedom. Basically: CRT should be opposed because freedom is only the freedom to do what is good. Racism must be allowed because people should be free to do what they want. 🤷 030
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Since they believe that, say, my being non-binary is inherently self-destructive, they'd say that I'm *less* free for being allowed to use they/them pronouns. Freedom would mean living my best life as a tradwife (again). I'm not kidding, this is what they are arguing for these days. 100
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 23/08/2026One of the things I've started seeing regularly in the right wing circles I grew up in is a redefinition of "freedom". They define it specifically as being allowed to do the things that *they* believe are right and virtuous. The doublethink is kind of wild tbh. 1260

Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 24/04/2026You're right, I do know enough about your life to know what you think about someone dating their employee. Knowing that you've done that is another part of why I was coming to a reasonable conclusion, not making a bad-faith leap. It was a bad call when you did it and it's a bad call to excuse it. 100
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 24/04/2026I think what you're missing is just what a big deal it is for someone to provide housing to their employee and then try to get sex from them. That's not just standard young adult behavior, and it's not nearly as far a leap from there to my exhusband's behavior as you seem to think. 100
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 24/04/2026...my ex husband was 22 when he started r*ping me so I guess that's chill then. Also she was her boss AND provided her housing? I'm thrilled that we're able to connect with our community again this way. Thank y'all so much. 4245
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 22/05/2025Having friends who get it has been so helpful to me. When we were denied community like this growing up, it's so healing now. And I hope that caring parents, legislators, anyone who has the opportunity to help the kids going through it now, will listen to us. 010
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 22/05/2025Therapy and medication have helped a lot. Having pets, friends, community, and safety have been huge for me. I've also cut ties with... basically anyone who would happily continue to contribute to my PTSD. Anyone I still have nightmares about. 10/10 would recommend. 020
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 22/05/2025Be a safe adult for them to speak with. Be one of the few adults in their lives who is kind to them and will love them no matter who they turn out to be. Having a college prof who was open about his depression was also really helpful - it allowed me to admit to myself my own mental health issues. 010
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 22/05/2025Access to a qualified mental health professional, not just a Christian Counselor who's goal would be to maintain my submission to the high-control religious system. Access to peers and friends outside the cult woulda been amazing. Not having abuse happening in the home might have helped too lol 010
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 22/05/2025It wasn't. Mental health issues were presumed to be due to a lack of willpower or faith. Therapy with a qualified professional was absolutely not allowed. I wanted to study psychology in college but my parents prohibited it. 010
Rochelle @nonnumberchar.bsky.social · 22/05/2025I have a PTSD diagnosis. Much of this was due to the isolation, having nowhere to get away from the things happening in that house, and the high-control religious environment that got my parents homeschooling in the first place. I'm still recovering. 010
