Hit a motherload of idiocy on a post "joking" about telling your #homeschooled kids not to talk about your conspiracy theories in public. Remember: these people are these children's ONLY source of information, and all these people believe they are qualified to teach every grade and every subject.

Homeschool parent: thinks "exposure" is the same as "teaching" even though it failed 75% of the time in their own experience. These morons should not be homeschooling.
You can expose your children to everything early on but they are not going to pick up these skills until they are ready. I have 5 (4 were/are) boys all homeschooled. 3 of the 4 weren't efficiently reading until they were 8 one of them was reading at 5. They were all exposed to the same curriculum.

This is just... indescribably sad. The amount of paranoia that this mother is using to justify isolating her child. She's avoiding the risk of something that's forgettable in the grand scheme of things by guaranteeing something awful is happening. Social isolation is extremely harmful. #homeschool
My son is homeschooled and he plays like this for hrs outside. No kid would be able to play so chill in elementary school with out [sic] being picked on by other kids. This, I love this so much. He is so smart and sweet.

Not "fake it till you make it." Just "fake it." Fake grades. Fake the transcripts. Just lie about your child's education on official documents they'll need in adulthood, no biggie.

This shit? This is beyond infuriating. The original poster is "bragging" now that his son can finally read, he's reading so much! As if this isn't a gigantic, flaming red flag. Your son clearly wanted to read-- he just had incompetent teachers. Imagine everything he's missed. That time is GONE.
Post: my 15-yr-old homeschooled son didn't learn to read until he was 11

Comment 1: this is very reassuring! As [sic] I have an 8 year old boy that [sic] isn't reading. He loves me reading to him and listening to his Yoto, but gets frustrated when I ask him to work on actually reading. Praying that stepping back and letting him get curious on his own will help! ... [followed by anecdote about bike riding]

Comment 2: I needed this. My daughter is 7, will be 8 in the summer and I feel so much pressure because she can't read. She's such a smart and mature girly but just can't grasp it.

Homeschool mom: boys have too much energy to go to school! The only education they need is... how to chop wood Y'all-- she's dead serious. She's PROUD of pulling her children out of school and thinks they're getting a sufficient education by being forced into hard labor. #homeschooling #homeschool
they thrive when they learn how to put their energy to good use

through learning skills they can use for life--skills that help them build responsibility, resiliency, contribute to our family's day to day life, and skills they can use to build a successful future.

Skills like chopping wood, stacking wood, and tending to our wood stove, to name a few 👏

Homeschool mom: "there's no such thing as "being behind" in homeschooling (She's responding to a post where a mom admits to doing nothing for at least four months)
1st take a breath... there isn't a such thing as "behind" in homeschooling. As long as the child is making progress & learning something... you are fine. When I say learning something... it can be that if they helped with the build of the kennel building in any way, they are learning - even just watching it be built is learning. If they learned to cook eggs or have baked a cake or anything with you they are learning. Learning doesn't only happen with paper, pencils or computers programs. On a busy day have them watch a video or something... heck even having them watch Mr. Peabody & Sherman teaches aspects of history in a fun way. 2nd school years for homeschooling is different... school doesn't start in Aug/Sept & end in Jun - they school year is in many ways all year long with break here & there to deal with life. It isn't always easy to let go of the traditional ways of education, but homeschooling follow very few of the traditional ways of educating. Please don't beat yourself up about all this... kids learn faster then we think & can surprise us in so many ways went it comes to learning.

My favorite thing about the homeschool community is how hard they gas you up.

I'll be like, I don't have it in me to do school today. And they're like, girl, don't!!!

Post: "We haven't done even one day of school in a month. I'm over his excuses and tired of him trying to put one over on me. He's using my mental health against me." In the comments: He's 11 and autistic. #homeschooling
Is anyone homeschooling an ASD child? We've now been withdrawn from public school for a month now and haven't completed one full day of school work. My son is very intelligent so I know he can complete the work if he puts his mind to it but I'm over his excuses of why he can't do something and him trying to pull one over on me with his emotions and attitude. I don't know if I'm seeking advice or just needing to vent...Thank you everyone. My son is 11 and is mildly/high functioning asd. I did threaten to put him back in public school if he doesn’t work with me on his schooling. We use miacademy plus supplement with some work books so we can work on his handwriting. I never push to work all day, but I do tell him that we have to do more than just his vocab words and life skills. We have to work on some math, science etc. He knows that I will work with him and help him on his school work, I just won’t do his work for him. He’s gotten to the point where he’s using my own mental health and tiredness against me and it’s getting to be to much.

Homeschool parents: ugh it's so annoying when people bring up "what about socialization?" 🙄 Also homeschool parents: my kids have learned to socialize while I'm at the grocery store! My kids are DEFINITELY not desperate for human connection! #homeschooling
Try going places where it is normal for kids to play together. The park is an obvious one, but the pool or a watermark is decent. Libraries usually have a kid section with computers and such. It's a great place to practice not just running up to every kid they see to loudly introduce themselves.  There are some museums that are interactive and designed to involve younger kids... Usually science museums.  Those are all places to be around kids, but being around adults is important too and going through the ordinary and typical places. You can't pay $30 a day to go to on special field trips. Even just going to the grocery store is important. While we walk the aisles and while I shop, my kids are learning how to politely navigate narrow spaces and not get in other people's way, and they will talk to the other shoppers. Initially they introduce themselves to EVERYONE. "Hi! I'm _______! I'm # years old!" Then they started to add "and this is_____..... Introducing me and the rest of the family to them. It's quite frustrating sometimes.... But then out of nowhere, they stop saying the same introduction and they start telling people why we are there. "Hi. We are grocery shopping. Are you getting food too?" And  eventually that all gets replaced with only interrupting others to say "excuse me" to get past or when they are in someone's way or to ask someone where the bathrooms are etc... They still talk to people, but they let the other shoppers initiate the conversation instead of demanding that everyone talks to them. This is coming from someone that went to public school, but my best friend in my teens was homeschooled. We met at church youth group. Church is another great place if you enjoy that, but I avoided mentioning that at the top since not everyone is religious.

Homeschool mom: "my job isn't to teach my kids" I ... what #homeschooling
Britt Elder Tennyson most homeschoolers (at least that I know) see themselves as facilitators rather than teachers. My job is not to teach my children everything, but to connect them with the resources they need in order to thrive - I won't be the algebra teacher, just like I'm not the pottery teacher, or the gymnastics coach 🤷🏻‍♀️

Parent: we haven't done school in months is that ok? Comments: yeah that's normal #homeschooling I can attest that it is, unfortunately, "normal" for homeschool parents to quit for long periods. Years, even. "Normal" doesn't equal "ok" or "good"
Anyone get very behind in a school year but it not affect your child overall? I had our 3rd baby #3 12-27-25. The end of the pregnancy (October on) was rough. And while I’m doing good with recovery, I have no energy or willpower for school just yet. We did some in Novembe, but since then nothing. He’s 7 1/2, in “1st grade”. I also have a 2.5 year old, in the throes of terrible 2s. So. Has this happened to anyone else and has it negatively affected school? Or is this just post partum anxiety roaring?

Math for delayed learner with autism

My son is 9 but at beginner 2nd grade level math. He struggles to understand the concepts and tries to memorize everything(he cant though because he has poor memory). We have tried khan academy, abc mouse, and one other curriculum that was textbook but cant remember its name to save my life.

Ive considered math u see but afraid it wont be well rounded enough. He works best with videos and manipulatives. Id prefer to do minimal prep but will take the time to go over lessons with him.

Im average at math, so my confidence is good, but I sometimes struggle to explain concepts in a way that my son can understand. Hence the videos and visuals being a neccesity for math.

Thanks guys

"Or lack thereof" is usually the result, Heather. #unschooling #homeschooling
There are two common “themes” that Unschooling currently encompasses. The first, is the true meaning. A completely self led learning experience. Wherein the child’s education, (or lack thereof,) is left entirely up to the child themselves. No outside influence from parents or guardians is pressed upon the child to encourage or enforce education.
The child is free to learn WHAT they want, WHEN the want, HOW they want & IF they want. The parent’s maid [sic] role is that of the question answerer. The experience provider. The guide, & the stable foundation from which to garner information when asked.

This approach encourages a willingness to ask, be curious, delve into interests, explore opportunities, and to ultimately be a self starter who trusts their OWN minds, desires & abilities.

Oh look, more 8-year-olds who can't read! #homeschooling She was, indeed, validated in the comments.
Facebook post in "Unschooling Littles: Non-Coercive Homeschooling & Unschooling": just came to vent and find some people who have experienced this too. My mom talks to me about my oldest (8 in December) not reading yet more and more frequently the older she gets. She is making progress on her own with pre-reading skills and I told my mom that and I've even started doing a little more intentional stuff at home since my daughter expressed desire toward that sort of thing. Yesterday my mom called and she bought a reading program and wants to come to my house twice a week at set times and do this program with my daughter because she feels bad for her not being able to read yet. She doesn't want to drive out and then my daughter not want to do it so she wants it to be like "Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2pm we do a reading lesson". That is so not how we roll. 😂 I told her I am willing to let her try one time at least but there can be no forcing and if my kid wants to stop she is allowed to. I doubt my daughter will sit at set times for this. 😂 Also, I told her I don't love the idea of having to be home and dressed (me) at certain times every week. I highly value the flexibility that Unschooling brings. But I am game to try it one time. She tried to do this with another thing a while back and it only lasted 3-4 times so I'm hoping it fizzles out like that. Unless my daughter is a big fan and then it's fine by me.

A note on homeschool illiteracy: when homeschool parents say their child "can't read" they don't mean "they're not at grade level." They really do mean *can't. read.*
Parent in "Raising Lifelong Learners" facebook group: My 8.5 year old doesn't read yet but wants to learn (and wants to try in a more formal fashion) and I ordered Hooked on Phonics to try with her. She doesn't like games on the phone though so my question is: will she still learn enough with just the books and such but skipping the app?

In a comment: At this stage in my life I don't have a lot of time during the day to commit to sitting down with her. Hooked on phonics seems like I can actually handle it a couple times a week... [goes on to ask for a comparison to All About Reading]
