Who has such a consistent bedtime that going to bed 15min early is significant?! Does this even make sense for babies?? (I don't know anything about babies)
Screenshot
Start preparing tonight
The Sleep Health Foundation recommendsgoing to bed 15 to 20 minutes earlier for the three or four nights leading up to the change.

Even though daylight saving time begins in two sleeps, there's nothing stopping you from trying an earlier bedtime tonight.

And while you're at it, plan on waking up a little earlier over the weekend too.

Wait what?!
We are used to Trump's kneejerk diplomacy by now, but this instalment seems egregious - and baffling, with little explanation offered.
And it will be particularly difficult news for the thousands of crew members on board the vessels stranded at the strait, with Rubio warning on Tuesday (US time) they were running low on food and water, and [yellow highlight begins] 10 people had already died. [Yellow highlight ends]
A large part of this stalemate is down to the shipping liners and their insurers. Iran is playing menace in the strait, but its attacks thus far have been pretty paltry. Still, it is difficult to send a ship and crew into such potential danger. Project Freedom was an attempt to overcome that hesitation.

I read this before falling asleep last night and woke up still thinking about it: @mariofraioli.com on Parker Morse's professional generosity. There's a lot of pressure *not* to be like this! We could all benefit from being more like Parker. open.substack.com/pub/themorni...
Screenshot. Text: I was shaken yesterday by the news of Parker Morse’s sudden passing from a cardiac event at the age of 52. Parker, whose wife, Alison Wade, writes the excellent Fast Women newsletter, was the original webmaster for Runner’s World way back when; he reported regularly for World Athletics’ website and other outlets, and performed behind-the-scenes media work at the Boston Marathon. I didn’t know Parker super well but we exchanged emails on occasion. He was a kind and generous man. I’ll never forget the first email he sent me back in 2005. I had just had my first interview published for Fast Women, a website that New York Road Runners owned (and Alison ran) at the time, and he wrote to me out of the blue, encouraging me to pitch Kate Gwyther’s story as a feature to New England Runner magazine. (n.b. I took his advice, and it was the first print magazine piece I ever had published.) He also told me to pursue doing more interviews and gave me the emails of editors who might be interested in publishing them. It was an unselfish gesture that had an impact on 23-year-old me and helped shape the trajectory of my career and life in a way I never could have imagined. Please keep Parker, Alison, and their two daughters in your thoughts as they navigate this devastating time

Reading media coverage of something you have actual knowledge about is always eye-opening, athletics edition (Last pic: 200m on March 29 was the race between Kennedy and Gout last year at Maurie Plant meet. On March 21 Kennedy had won a silver medal at World Indoor Championships)
Nine papers headline "Gout-paced: is it time to worry about rising star? Gout Gout lost again to Lachlan Kennedy. Should we be concerned?"Part of the article: "Kennedy beating Gout last year was an upset, because while he was known to be quick he hadn't really done anything."World Athletics stats page for Kennedy shows he won silver medal at World Indoors over 60m the week before he beat Gout at Maurie Plant meet

This is very funny. We might actually get those subs! ...because they are outdated and the US has deemed them inappropriate for any plausible military scenario
SMH article headline "Shift in US Navy strategy bodes well for Australia's subs"First column of the article. "The United States Navy is preparing for a significant shift in its plans that could reduce its reliance on Virginia-class attack submarines, potentially making it easier for Australia to acquire the vessels as planned under the AUKUS agreement ... The navy has recently advertised its plans for a 'hedge strategy' that moves away from reliance on large and expensive aircraft strike carrier groups towards more flexible and adaptable fleets..."

This guy's rescuers were my kind of rescuers He hasn't had food or water for 2 days, not much for shelter, and...
The man used a sail to make a makeshift tent but had no food or water. He was finally spotted on Sunday morning by a passing yacht, whose crew raised the alarm. A lifeboat team from Andijk brought him safely ashore.

According to the KNRM, the man was slightly weakened but otherwise in good condition. [highlight begins] He was given coffee, a shower and dry clothes [highlight ends] in Andijk before being taken to a hotel to recover.

He told rescuers he was extremely relieved to see them, as he had begun to fear he would not survive the ordeal. The KNRM said the case highlights the importance of having emergency equipment such as a marine radio, phone or flares on board.

And while the whole story is about BUDGET CRISIS it turns out the NDIS came in under budget forecasts despite increasing participation! Clearly the framing should be, "are we spending enough on these supports" not budget crisis
Another screenshot. Text "but even as the number of participants grew, the scheme came in under budget forecasts for the 2024-25 financial year, as the rising cost of the NDIS comes into focus for the Albanese government before its economic roundtable next week. "

Odd framing to say kids are "relying" on the NDIS. I'm not an expert but from observation, seem it's the main way that the government funds/supports kids to access therapies that will help them e.g. be ready for school. You could move those costs elsewhere if you like but why would you?
Screenshot from p1 today's SMH. Column starts "more Australian children are turning to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, with 16 per cent of all six-year-old boys relying on it..."

Reminds me of the bizarre "white tshirts only" rule at NYC pools
Pool Rules
Photo of Swimming Pool rules sign
New York’s outdoor pools are great places for summer fun and active recreation. Each summer over one million visitors learn to swim, keep fit, make friends, and beat the summer heat.

For everybody’s health, safety, and protection, we ask our guests to observe the following rules:

Bathing suits must be worn on the deck and in the water. Men’s bathing suits must have mesh linings. Hats may be worn on the deck for sun protection but are not allowed in the water. [Highlight begins] Plain white T-shirts may be worn over bathing suits if desired. [Highlight ends] Sneakers are not permitted. Rubber flip flops or water shoes are permitted.
No urinating or defecating in the pools.

Second, Adani seems to be claiming that because they pay superannuation it's fair that they don't pay corporate tax??
Screenshot with the word superannuation highlighted. Text: “Corporate income tax is just one part of Australia’s complex taxation system, and it is misleading to focus solely on corporate tax paid and ignore the contribution to the Queensland and Australian economies of the millions of dollars in combined GST, payroll tax, superannuation, royalties and more we paid in FY25,” the spokesperson said.

Any vegan bakers/nerds about? I've seen a few recipes with instructions like this. My coffee-drinking experience would put oat milk in the "creamy" category, not almond milk. Am I wrong or is "creaminess" different in baking vs drinking? Pic is from Georgia Irwin's vegan pastry cream recipe.
560ml (2 1/4 cup) soy milk (if you can't have soy, choose another creamy dairy-free milk like almond milk. Avoid rice and oat milk.)
