The hazard is natural. The disaster that follows is a decision. Decisions including who is & isn't helped. Free webinar on #NoNaturalDisasters and #InclusiveDRR, & why they are the same argument. For anyone starting a relevant degree next month. 16 Sept, 1pm BST, online. forms.gle/kfsouSyCa9AS...

Below it in large type, "Disasters are not natural or neutral", with "Disasters", "natural" and "neutral" in red and the rest in black. Underneath, the date 16 September 2026, and the line "An introduction to the linkages between #NoNaturalDisasters & #InclusiveDRR". We're very happy to see @iom.int getting onboard with our #NoNaturalDisasters campaign. One by one the UN agencies are seeing sense. The full article can be found here: bit.ly/4fAAwGI
Screenshot of the mobile version of the IOM (UN Migration) website. The page header shows the IOM logo, a menu button, language options (EN and ES), and a blue “Donate” button. Below is a second navigation bar with menu and search icons. A banner image shows a disaster-affected street with damaged buildings and piles of debris. Three cut-out figures are overlaid: a person sweeping outside a building, a person standing in the middle of the road carrying a bag, and a large pile of twisted roofing and rubble in the foreground. Beneath the image is the headline, “Why we no longer talk about ‘natural disasters’”. The opening paragraph begins by explaining that language matters in the humanitarian sector because the words used to analyse risks, engage with governments and design projects shape how problems and solutions are understood. It argues that the term “natural disaster”, while common in everyday language, is technically inaccurate.

A reminder: Disasters are not natural. The #NoNaturalDisasters campaign challenges the misleading idea that disasters are natural, arguing that while hazards may be unavoidable, their impacts are largely shaped by human decisions, inequality and vulnerability. www.drrdynamics.com/-nonaturaldi...

We all know disasters are not natural. They are shaped by the systems we build. The same is true for AI in DRR. If marginalised communities are missing from the data, they are missing from the decision. The harm that follows is designed in, not inevitable. #NoNaturalDisasters #InclusiveDRR #AI
A version of the popular “distracted boyfriend” meme set on a city street. In the foreground, slightly out of focus, a woman in a red sleeveless top walks past the camera. Over her chest is bold white text with a black outline reading: “Shiny AI governance framework.”
Behind her, a man in a blue checked shirt is turning his head to look at her with an exaggerated expression of interest. Over his torso is the text: “AI for DRR.”
Next to him, a second woman in a light blue sleeveless top looks at him with shock and disapproval. Over her torso is the text: “Inclusive data foundations.”
The image suggests that those focused on “AI for DRR” are being distracted by new or high-profile governance frameworks, while neglecting the more fundamental issue of inclusive data foundations.A bold graphic featuring a large red speech bubble outlined in black against a light grey background. Inside the speech bubble, the words “DISASTERS ARE NOT NATURAL” appear in uppercase letters. “DISASTERS ARE” and “NATURAL” are in black, while the word “NOT” is in white, creating strong contrast and emphasis. Beneath the speech bubble, the hashtag “#NoNaturalDisasters” is written in black, with the word “No” highlighted in red. The overall design is simple, high contrast, and visually striking, emphasising the message that disasters are shaped by human decisions and systems rather than being purely natural events.

UK phones will sound an emergency alert test tomorrow (Sunday 7th September 2025 at 3pm). For those who need to keep a device private (e.g. survivors of abuse), you can switch these alerts off (steps in image below). Please share this information widely. More here - www.gov.uk/alerts/optin...
Grey background graphic with bold red title text: ‘Switching off UK emergency test alerts’. Subheading in black says: ‘Especially useful for people with phones they need to keep private (survivors of domestic abuse & violence etc.)’. Below, three sections give instructions. Apple (iPhone/iPad): Go to Settings > Notifications, scroll to bottom, turn off Severe Alerts and Extreme Alerts. Android: Go to Settings and search Emergency Alerts, turn off Severe Alerts and Extreme Alerts. Other phones/tablets: Look in Messages or Settings (Sounds/General), find Wireless emergency alerts or Emergency broadcasts, turn off Severe, Extreme, and Test alerts.

We think we're so smart these days but some of the best ideas are old. This paper has been a cornerstone for my work, almost 50 years old. If we had listened we would have done everything possible to make development more equitable and reduce vulnerability to hazards. www.nature.com/articles/260...

The Texas floods show why using the term “natural disaster” matters. Funding cuts and other idealogical choices shaped the crisis, calling it ‘natural’ or an "act of God" shifts blame away from those policy choices. At least 84 people have died at time of writing. #NoNaturalDisasters
A quote in large red text reads, "That was an act of God; it's not the administration's fault the floods hit when it did." Below, in smaller black text, it states: "Karoline Leavitt (White House press secretary), July 2025 speaking about the floods in Texas, which killed at least 84 people." The background is light grey.
