I am very happy for myself that pigeons are my favorite animals. If you live in a city, and pigeons are your favorite animals, you can see them pretty much every time you leave the house. A real jackpot right there.

Thanks, yeah it's truly wild how much anger and hate some people are able to let out within seconds. Luckily my partner was ok overall.

of course this is supposed to be "my partner just asked a guy..", even though it must be said that she is also very just

her ability to just roll with a situation like this and let the abuse bounce off her is something that will never cease to amaze me, but it also just shouldn't be necessary in the first place. I, on the other hand, am out of my mind furious, so here I am, on Bluesky.

my just partner asked a guy who was loudly livestreaming, talking and watching videos on a full coach for hours to be a bit quieter, after which he flipped out, filmed her, put it on social media and asked people *again on livestream* to share it everywhere. truly great times we are living in

but I feel very torn often: my work is not very widely known (which makes sense) so I still feel that pressure regardless. but I get this is super dependent on context etc.
110
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
that really makes sense. tbf, last year when we had the redundancy-situation in Cardiff, publishing was the last thing on my mind. it's generally made me re-evaluate lots of priorities.
110
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
almost like academia (and the world?) as a whole is fucked 😂 Jokes aside - I really do think it is a manifestation of all this. As you say, we're all already so strained for time, so many people are off work for being burnt out or barely holding on, while we all have to publish more and more..
110
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
and it's not like I have a good alternative either - I'm just venting haha 😅

A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I also really don't think that this is on individual editors or reviewers, in particular being an editor must be a ridiculous amount of work, and I myself am familiar with the abundance of review requests. I do mean it when I say that the journal system doesn't work very well as a whole.
220
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
yeah I agree, that's the drawback I can think of too. but some of my papers have been sitting with me for literal years. there's a point where I just don't know whether they will ever get published, I might as well just stop trying and upload them so maybe *someone* will read them.
120
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
That's honestly a really nice idea!! Maybe we should all do that.
100
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
oh dear! my 1-month wait is truly nothing in comparison.. I obviously have had very long review waits before, but as far as I can tell i've never waited that long for it to go to the *editor*. it's just all quite depressing. the journal system we've got really doesn't work.
120
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
That's so sad!! And yes, same, they also said to me that it would've suffered and been killed by a cat or fox and that we did the right thing bringing it it. It's so so sad though. :(

A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I wish I could have at least made it feel less scared on its last evening, which I probably didn't by putting it in a box. Maybe it suffered a bit less at least than it would have otherwise. /5

I'm not saying the vet was bad or malicious or anything, just that it makes me so sad that a precious little creature didn't get a second chance when I can easily imagine a way it could have gotten it. I feel incredibly guilty for not doing more or something better to help this sweet little one. /4
100
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I think had I known that this is what would happen, I would have taken it home and tried a more specific wildlife or pigeon-rescue resource today to see if anything else could be done. I did call a Wildlife rescue center last night, who recommended to take it to the vet though. /3
100
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
After we handed it over and signed the papers, the vet said that if it was a broken wing, they'd have to put it to sleep, because it was too expensive to rehab a pigeon. I am still so upset by this. /2

A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Late last night, I met an injured pigeon. It looked like its wing was hurt, and it couldn't fly, but was able to walk. Over the course of a couple of hours or so, my partner and I managed to gently put it in a rescue box and take it to a vet. /1

A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
I'm not that keen on the journal just now haha. But yeah, I think you're right!
020
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
thank you! :) I think I'm so frustrated already because this paper has just been so through the ringer at multiple journals with delays.. but I can see that this is a sensible option
000
A. @nonamename.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
I submitted a paper to a journal almost a month ago, and it is *still* with the journal administrator - hasn't even gone to an editor to decide whether to send it to peer review. Should I withdraw or message them? Even for philosophy journal standards, this seems like a very long time..

It’s always odd to me when I get asked if I am wearing a mask because I am sick. In my experience, these days most people wearing a mask are doing so to prevent themselves getting sick, and most people who are sick don’t wear a mask at all.

This is why the Philosophy Tube episode on conversion therapy in Britain was so carefully worded and went through lawyers first! It’s difficult to educate the public on topics that rich and powerful groups do not want people to know about

This headline is a bit unfair on Exeter colleagues, and a tad rage/ clickbaity. But remember: no-one who works in a non-Oxbridge university is safe or even secure in their employment. The way policy is set up a large % will *inevitably and inexorably* lose their jobs.

Older lady peeped the rainbow flag on my bike, asked in a thick Russian accent “It’s your Pride?” She told me her youngest grandchild is “not she berry or he berry but no berry.” I said “Nonbinary?” She got so excited. Yes! Yes! And “Is a secret, but they are my“ *looks around, whispers* “favorite.”

By happenstance, I googled a philosophy colleague’s distinctive terminology today to find her papers on it. The first dozen search results were ALL her papers, or citations of them. The AI Overview didn’t mention her once. It falsely attributed her (non-tech) concept to some tech bros at Stanford.
