On Friday I'm doing a talk about local-first, interoperability... and yes, AI. Some months ago I started working on a harness called Ànima. It connects to your Solid POD, and can use any AI model and APIs. Even local ones! Join us here (talk in English): bd.ailishi.ai

I see that you called out the recipe app example! Indeed, recipe apps are not inherently "social". Hopefully we can have "non-social apps" in ATProto as well. Or as I call them, "Personal Apps". Since you mention that this deserves a dedicated blog post, I'm looking forward to that :).

It's long overdue, but I finally started working on a new version of Media Kraken that supports TV Shows, ratings, and many other features that people have been asking for :D. What features would you like to see?

A while ago, I came up with the term Interoperable Serendipity. I was thinking of Solid at the time, but it totally applies to ATProto as well, and I'd love to see it embraced there! I just opened a discussion in the community forum to talk about it: discourse.atmosphere.community/t/interopera...

Thanks, I'll check that out. Not sure about making a Space per recipe, though. I guess it's technically possible but reading through the proposal and blog series that doesn't seem to be the intended purpose of Spaces (one per resource). Let's wait for Daniel's reply though.

Hey, following up on this I read through the upcoming Permissioned Data proposal. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to work for my apps :(. I gave some feedback about this in the community forum, in case you want to check it out: discourse.atprotocol.community/t/permission...

Yeah, I get your point and I mostly agree with it (except that Solid did it "first", it's just not getting as much traction). I also like ATProto's practicality, but it's impossible to make the apps I want without permissioned data. I'll probably give it a try when it's available.
110
Noel De Martin @noeldemartin.com · 14/07/2026
And regarding the "does it scale" point... Yeah I agree with you there is a lot of things to improve there. Though I don't see why any of the same solutions that are being applied to ATProto wouldn't be applicable to Solid as well. Just nobody seems to have worked on that.

Ok, thanks for clarifying :). Yeah I know @thisismissem.social, so I'm aware of her opinions on the topic. I agree with you on most things, except that RDF is too "out there". I know RDF has a bad rap, but I came to it from a traditional web development background (Laravel/Vue) and I really like it

Noel De Martin @noeldemartin.com · 14/07/2026
If we are talking about "a data layer for the web", I really don't know how ATProto is better than Solid... It's just a matter of traction (ATProto has clearly more people interested)? Or is there something else you don't like about Solid?
100
Noel De Martin @noeldemartin.com · 14/07/2026
Would you mind sharing your honest opinion about the Solid Protocol? Don't get me wrong, I know plenty of things that are wrong with it. And I understand your enthusiasm with ATProto :). But seeing that it doesn't have support for private data (yet, I know), it's not so "people centered".

Noel De Martin @noeldemartin.com · 14/07/2026
I just watched your interview in the Design Systems podcast, and I'm always surprised when I hear you talk about ATProto and you say things like "it's unique as a people-centered data layer for the web" without mentioning the Solid Protocol (which IMO is much closer to that than ATProto).

I posted this on Reddit, and I'm getting exactly the type of reaction I expected xD. It's a shame that none of the people who like Laravel/Rails are showing up, though 🤷. But it's nice to have haters. Much better than indifference :).

Sure, with the small caveat that everything in ATProto is public, isn't it? That's probably the main reason why I haven't given ATProto a try and I'm still working with Solid... That and I do like RDF, maybe I'm weird 😅. But if ATProto supported storing private data, I'd definitely give it a try.

Can't you ask for the basic permissions and only request more when people try to use certain features? I'm genuinely asking, I don't know how ATProto works :). That's how it works for mobile apps, which helps people understand why the app is requesting some dangerous permission.

I have tried to use a couple of ATProto apps already, but I'm always taken aback by this screen :/. I don't think I'll use one until this is solved or I REALLY want to use some app. Why does this app need to read and write everything in my account? Can't I just give it read access?
ATProto authorization screen asking me to basically give this app permission to do everything in my account.

In theory yes, RDF has a lot of edge cases and awkwardness. But in practice, I can't say that's ever been a problem for me making apps. I addressed this in a presentation I did specifically about DX www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghGm...

And if ATProtocol eventually tackles private data, I won't consider it a viable replacement until there is more than one implementation for the PDS servers. As far as I know, there is only one at the moment.
100
Noel De Martin @noeldemartin.com · 30/11/2025
By the way, I don't think JSON-LD or RDF are the reason why Solid isn't working. It's the fact that the protocol itself is not being updated to solve problems that come up when developing apps, and also there isn't many people in the ecosystem working on DX or UX.
210
Noel De Martin @noeldemartin.com · 30/11/2025
Thanks for the shout-out :). Yeah, I would agree that Solid is not doing great... I haven't looked much into ATProtocol, because it's mostly for public data. But if they tackle the private use-case, I agree it can achieve Solid's vision. But I haven't looked into lexicons, so I can't say for sure.
