Because in most states they are unregulated, they can hire teachers who are not certified, they can use curriculum they buy from themselves, they don't have to offer transportation. or give free or reduced meals even to kids who qualify.

Public dollars belong in public schools. States with voucher programs have blown billion dollar holes in their budgets. Trump & Project 2025 want all states to have a voucher program. James Talarico, candidate for Senate in Texas, has seen the damage vouchers have done. Say NO to Vouchers!

Universal healthcare isn’t a luxury or a handout. It’s a social contract: your access to medically necessary care should be governed by need, not wealth, employment, age, race, religion, gender, or ability to pay. A healthy society recognizes healthcare as a basic public right.

Some districts may work a little differently, but for the most part they are run by officials from the community that are elected by the people of that community. That's not true of private or of most charter schools.
