He looks forward to not only bring creativity training to Portugal but also incorporate some of the concepts in his Critical Thinking teaching, which also covers Day Science. Thank you, @night-science-inst.bsky.social!

New preprint 📣! We reanalysed stress granule transcriptomes and found differential centrifugation is strongly biased by RNA length. Correcting for this erases most reported overlap. Mitochondrial RNAs remain as a modest signal, hinting at immune signalling. doi.org/10.64898/202...

When the PI’s away, the Lab will happily and productively play. 🙂

Farewell and welcome: Marta Bica 🇵🇹(PhD alumna, 2018–2026) moves to Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre as a single-cell/spatial transcriptomics expert, while Alessandro Minguzzi 🇮🇹joins today, becoming a PhD student in Sept, studying CDKN2A in cancer. #Alumni #PhD

(3/4) Same story in alternative splicing. A gene either “looks” differentially spliced or it doesn’t, depending on the threshold you pick. betAS models each PSI estimate with a beta distribution, so the uncertainty behind it is visible.

(2/4) Take single-cell clustering. Set resolution to 0.4 and you might get 8 clusters; set it to 1.2 and you get 19. Both look like well-separated cell groups, but that alone won't tell you which reflects real biology. In scStudio, resolution is a parameter you explore, not a hidden default.

Garbage In, Plot Out 🧠 A bioinformatics pipeline will always give you something: a plot, a p-value, a cluster. It won’t tell you whether the parameters you chose were the right ones. That’s the black box problem in bioinformatics 📊. A thread on why critical thinking matters 🧵

On the last 25th of February, Nuno introduced the Lab to our new colleagues in a seminar entitled "Thinking critically about big data at NOVA Medical School". It was very well attended (don't be fooled by the empty first couple of rows) and received. We feel very welcome at NMS! 😊
