@drleonj.bsky.social Ever since he was a pup, big Yoda likes to sleep fully braced against solid objects, like a hungover freshman on a Sunday morning. #Dogs

My neighbour is just back from a history and memory conference in Argentina and brought over this extraordinary bottle of infused vermouth she purchased at Mar del Plata. Exquisite hardly seems adequate a term.

Not unhappy to have an extra day in paradise. Every visit I come to see Chesley Trott’s “We Arrive” sculpture in Barrs Bay, in memory of the 72 Americans who walked off the slaver Enterprise to freedom here in 1835. I wrote about this again in Slavery & Abolition last year. The RBYC is to rear.

Manumission documents often stop me short for enormity of change and future hope they contain, but often too for present limits. Here Rose Potter receives “one full half of herself and time”, the other half in caring for her owner. Often these will read “entire freedom”, as though in surprise.
Detail from manumission record of Rose Potter, Bermuda, 1800, section reading that she was freed for “one full half of herself and time”, by in this case, Kate Potter, her mother.

Strange to have such unvarying weather, coming from a place where every kind of weather happens before lunchtime and it might snow while you’re in a t-shirt. How can the high and the low be the SAME, day after day?!?!? I know why, but 3rd decade researching/working here and still find it strange.

Always interesting to see the phrase “share and share alike” in a will, the phrase having moved from its literary origins. This will is 1834, the reference here is to two lots of land to be enjoyed equally by two daughters.

Thank you, that is very gratifying! We’ve only painted the grim outside, and added front garden; ugly windows need replaced and front entry extension planned. The funky modernist bungalows here rarely go up for sale so we had to settle for location. Kitchen was more successful, few walls taken out.

Sitting reading in my living room, I am so pleased with the way these arches play together in the light. I added them to dull squared trim-framed openings in last year’s kitchen renovation to suit the 1954 age of the house and those on the street that haven’t been altered. @brunotonelli.bsky.social

Honoured to be giving annual Packwood-Robinson talk for Bermuda’s Ministry of Culture this August. Named for two Black Bermudian educators who in the ‘70s, w Nellie Musson, began to write Bermuda’s history from below. Packwood asked simply: if slavery here was benign why were there so many runaways?

Aha! Woke up after last night’s storm to see an iceberg floating across the Coish, between us and Seals Nest Islets 7.5km offshore. Not especially big one but it is fairly far away. Something for the guests at the Inn to gaze upon. Met two lawyers from Rochester last night who are guests. Loud.
Early morning photo of gloomy skies and calmed down ocean, with the headland that encloses Joe Batt’s Arm in the near distance. On the horizon are uninhabited islands. Passing close to those islands, an iceberg is visible against the dark of the rock, the berg being the usual two peak variety.

Behold the Bangbelly! Had to go back for more pork shoulder and fenugreek cod. The salt pork & molasses against the orange custard, so good. Lions Den hike this morning, along a bit of Fogo headland where four fishing communities once existed, settled in mid-19thC as folk relocated from depleted fishing grounds elsewhere. Eastern Tickle here had 107 people in 1935 Census, church and school, all gone without a trace since 1940s.
View of the protected cove, or tickle, on the Atlantic where the fishing community of Eastern Tickle existed for a century from mid—19th. No trace at all now, just bog and rock, and two fishermen in small boat checking their lobster pots along the shore.Late 19thC photo of Eastern Tickle showing wooden houses along the shore, fishing rooms and wharves on the water, and several fishing boats in the cove, from shallops to dorries.View of Fogo harbour from south, with Brimstone Head prominent above town, the Fogo Co-Op fish plant dominating the harbour, a large wooden church and several dozen houses. In the far distance the top of an iceberg can be seen above Change Islands. Bangbelly restaurant is just below Brimstone Head, on the Main Street.

Came across an uncommon nautical term - woman head - I had not seen in a document before, this one from an 1828 Bermuda Vice Admiralty Court case. More commonly used in a carver's records to indicate a figurehead that was a bust rather than a full torso. #MaritimeHistory
