Like this might seem obvious, but I feel like I see a lot of ideological driven arguments online, and it can sometimes be hard to pin point why it feels like ideology. I think talking in terms of policy and outcomes can help cut right through this.

When evaluating policy you should always ask: "What will create the largest public good?"

It would be really funny if we get a culture swap, where the left likes AI art because of accessibility and the right dislikes AI art because of western culture or something.

As someone who has been to EA global and lurked on various ea forums for a while, this is just not really true. It exists as a meme, but no one who i actually met / interacted with was actually afraid of this

Also worth noting that the post argues against the trade with ants analogy.

Sure, but I can also think for myself. It is often faster for me to get to certain thoughts by reading other people, even if I don't necessarily agree with them. Also, as with any journal, you need to know who you are reading. LW is not a singular blob.

i get it, but as it turns out people on LW have actually thought about a lot of stuff, and usually quite a lot earlier than others

I will also say that global health charities are also climate charities in the sense that they help the people who will be most adversely affected by climate change. See for instance: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wmk...

A lot of it is x-risk stuff, so nuclear, bio and ai safety. EA works with the Important, Tractable and Neglectedness framework. Consensus is broadly that climate change is both important and tractable, but not neglected (i.e. many people are working on it). How long term depends who you ask.

It still does!! It is just a big group, and the malaria people dont get the most attention. Also USAID cuts hurt the global health cause area

Nothing is a better ad for EA than all the insane anti-EA takes. Anyways consider giving 10% to charity.

I think its interesting that the entropy curve looks not symmetrical. By time symmetry it is symmetric on average, but i wonder if there is something else interesting here.

This is also known as collider bias. When A -> C <- B (i.e. A and B "collide" at C) then conditioning on C creates a correlation.

By Berkson's paradox you actually expect two independent skills (eg being nice and being skilled) to become negatively correlated when you require some combination of both to successfully run a store for instance.

George Washington was paid $25,000 annually for the presidency. That is between $1 million (inflation adjusted) and $40 million (relative to mean wage) in today's money.

This seems interesting. Splitting the "prediction" part of the transformer from the "maintaining state" part seems useful. There have been a couple of results in this direction recently: arxiv.org/abs/2607.01218

The State-Prediction Separation Hypothesis
Transformers use the same forward computation stream to both predict the next token and store useful state for future token predictions. We formulate the \emph{state-prediction separation hypothesis}:...

To play GTO you (usually) need to randomize. To play optimally *against* GTO, you don't. If the opponent's strategy is fixed then you can view the game as a POMDP. POMDPs always have deterministic optimal policies.
