Is AMS-announce now members only? A colleague of mine is trying to post an announcement about a seminar and is finding it paywalled or something.

MTO 32.3: Manabe, Genre Topics as Narrative in Yoasobi’s “Idol” (2023)

My article on Yoasobi’s “Idol” is now on Music Theory Online! It considers the role of genre-topics in narrating this song, the opening theme for the 1st season of anime Oshi no ko. Rap, trap, singer-songwriter style, J-pop otaku, and Eurobeat combine to tell the tragic, unknowable story of Ai.

There haven't been any public hearings about putting a nuclear reactor 37 miles from Bloomington. What expertise is in Indiana to run this? What safety measures would be in place? How would the public be notified of an accident? What plans for evacuation are there? @wfiuwtiunews.bsky.social

The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I wouldn't advise it. Tenure is serious business. A Reddit post can be seen as unserious by some scholars, who may then project that assessment to the candidate. It might also look desperate. At the least, I'd talk to a dean or senior faculty at yr institution first.

I think the problem here is unverifiability—a committee or reader has no way of knowing who really wrote the comment. A student evaluation is verifiably from that course’s pool. So as others have said, you could try including it, but I doubt it would be taken seriously.

Japan similarly has cycled through many short prime ministerships since the bubble burst in 1990, with the exceptions of Koizumi and Abe. The good thing about a revolving door at the top is that it’s harder (albeit not impossible) to install an authoritarian regime.

I'm less concerned about her social media profile from a few years ago and more concerned about the fact that she doesn't seem to have held any full-time job for more than two years, per her LinkedIn profile. She's not someone to ditch a Dominican incumbent serving a heavily Hispanic district over.

Not crazy about Mamdani's latest endorsement of Avila Chevalier over Espaillat. She doesn't seem to have much in the way of steady work experience. Espaillat is a self-made Dominican immigrant and the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus w/ decades of service in elected offices.

The Marcos's Edifice Complex, when they built propagandistic buildings named after themselves, took place between 1966-1981, mostly during the height of their power. Sometimes a propagandistic power grab is just that, not someone knowing that their time is almost up.

Interesting, but I don't agree with: "Strongmen at the height of their game don’t need the ballroom. They don’t need to rename the Kennedy Center after themselves. They don’t need the rebranded monuments and memorials....That’s Marcos in Manila in 1985."

20 yrs ago, Princeton had a similar cap on As. The cap applied to the department rather than a course, so that seminars could still have many As (but intro courses, no). They reversed that policy, though, bcs it disadvantaged Princeton students in post-undergrad competitions. It doesn't work.

Also, what happened in Hungary won't happen in the US, as the US is not a parliamentary system. It's also extremely rare that one gets a 2/3 majority in the US Senate; the last such majority was 1965-67.
