WE KNOW
In a conversation between president Lyndon Johnson and the Greek ambassador to Washington, DC, Alexander Matsas, in June 1964, Johnson said to Matsas Greece had to agree to divide Cyprus between Cypriot Greeks and Turks. Matsas replied this was impossible because the Constitution forbade giving Greek territory away. Johnson became extremely angry and said:

“Fuck your parliament and your constitution. America is an elephant. Cyprus is a flea. Greece is a flea. If these two fleas continue itching the elephant, they may just get whacked good …. We pay a lot of good American dollars to the Greeks, Mr. Ambassador. If your Prime Minister gives me talk about democracy, parliament and constitution, he, his parliament and his constitution may not last long.”

The United States followed through with this threat. It encouraged the Greek military to shut down democracy in Greece. The military grabbed power in 1967. In 1974, the United States and its Greek military client did nothing to prevent a Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Turkey still occupies about forty percent of Cyprus.

The third Dawn Seliger* story, "Let Us Create Nothing but GOD!" will appear in Through a Glass Darkly: An Anthology of Occult Investigations, Chris Kelso and Preston Grassmann, eds., in the first half of2027.
Mock up of a thick book in forest green with a darkly expressionist bit of cover art suggestive of a landscape. Artist unknown, at least to me.

Chatting at the Lovecraft Café
By Nick Mamatas
Do I need to present my anti-fascist bona ides? Okay. November 1993 in New Hope, Pennsylvania, counter-protesting and dealing with mounted police when Nazis and Klansmen held a demonstration-cum-party they called “Gay Bash ’93.” Summer 1995, East Village, New York, helping de-Nazify Cherry Tavern and with street marches and some tussling. October 1999, Manhattan, eighteen KKK members versus six thousand of us counter-protestors. (I like those odds!) February 2017, Berkeley, California, dodging pepper-ball bullets on the UC Berkeley campus as then-popular μαλάκας (as my protest sign declared) Milo Yiannopoulos was holding an “alt right” rally, and then months more of counter-protesting as the fash realized that they could crowdfund their movement by livestreaming themselves beating up local skateboarders and punks. I am against fascism.
“So, why be pro-Lovecraft?” (sans quotes) is how this paragraph began in the irst, unsatisfying, draft of this essay. For the answer, read the play.

Bluesky can't handle FB links easily, so here is a cap of my note of thanks to this Saturday's performance of The Failure of the Century at @laworldcon.bsky.social
Home from Los Angeles Worldcon, which was great! I managed to miss almost everyone (that wasn't the great part) unless they came by the PM Press booth in the dealer's room to say hi to me. Hotel lobby hamburger dinners for half-a-hundred bux just ain't for me, what can I say?
The Failure of the Century went amazingly well. It was a very "stagey" staged reading—99% a full performance except that the actors were on-book. Huge thanks to Scott Edelman Cody Goodfellow Rachel S. Heslin Jim Keller S Elizabeth Ransdell and Josh Wilson. Their performances (and Josh as publisher, house lights flicker-off-er and general dogsbody) were epic. The actors brought their own costumes from home (and made/got stuff such as a massive Egyptian nemes and a fake mustache), and props (typewriter! letter opener!), and special effects (blood! sound montage!) did stage management, and worked out blocking and gestural elements of their performances in an instant, despite only having rehearsed via Zoom previously.
We only got access to the venue and were even able to see what it was like ninety minutes before showtime too. The Worldcon tech crew was also thrillingly competent and hit all the sound and light cues despite zero time to practice.
As no theater company was involved, I'll have to mark the show as "self-produced" on my CV, but it wasn't. The actors and publisher produced it while I just rushed behind them saying that their great ideas were great ideas!
About thirty-forty people came and dozens watched virtually, and we sold many copies of the playscript both right after the show and throughout the rest of the con, including four on the historically dead Worldcon day of Monday.
It was very exciting, and more than a little exhausting. And now it's all over. That's the theater for ya!
Coming soon? Austin, Texas!
