We assumed transit had a persuasion problem - that too many Americans weren't sold on it. We were wrong: support is already high. What's missing is a story making it feel urgent, relevant, and actionable. We built a new resource to help you tell that story: transitnarrativeproject.com

Americans Overwhelmingly Support Transit. So Why Isn't It Happening?
8 in 10 Americans back transit investment — yet funding still stalls. TransitCenter's new research identifies the belief gap and the messaging that closes it.

Why does this matter? Peer review affects not only individual careers but also the field of transportation knowledge. We conclude that the bias against qual methods "does a disservice to the entire field, including practicing transportation professionals, and ultimately to all of us as travelers."
We conclude with the assertion that the primary goal of transportation research, stripped to its essentials, is the discovery of knowledge that will help improve lives. Many of our interviewees reported that they feel hindered by methodological gatekeeping in transportation studies. This, we contend, limits that primary goal of knowledge discovery in pursuit of betterment. Not every transportation researcher needs to achieve mastery in every research method, but all would benefit from a broader understanding of methodological strengths and weaknesses. A systematic bias against one method of discovery may leave some questions never conceptualized. It does a disservice to the entire field, including practicing transportation professionals, and ultimately to all of us as travelers.

Interviewees described challenges to publishing qual transportation research stemming from misunderstandings of the accepted standards for qual research, a lack of expertise in assessing qual research, and, from some editors, a belief that qualitative research is not a valid method.

While the number & share of qualitative articles in transportation journals is growing, it still represents a tiny fraction (less than 4%) of published articles in top-ranked journals.
Chart showing the share of transport journals articles that use qual methods from 2000-2022. Percentages range from 1 to 4%.

We document the dominance of quantitative methods in transportation journals and the biases against qualitative research methods in the peer review process. We (A) systematically reviewed the methods used in top transportation journals, and (B) conducted interviews with 46 researchers and editors.

When we think of sexism, it's easy to think of *active* efforts to discriminate against women. But sexism also operates *passively* - like through our inaction on issues like childcare and paid family leave. In that context, return-to-office policies are sexist in consequence, even if not in design.

The firm, Marzulla Law L.L.C., which has close ties to the conservative legal movement, called the research “false and injurious” and said it would complain to Brown’s public and private funders, including the Energy Department, the National Science Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.
