Do you know how many people in MN-5 have a positive Ilhan story? It is bc she is one of us. She is in community. She is showing up to schools, community gardens, small business openings, events, and so many places bc people invite her. She is one of us. The threats are there and she shows up anyway

Today I didn’t educate them. I didn’t need to alienate my god parent’s friends. I walked away. I am not confident that was the right choice. I know that I will not talk to them in the future. That feels right for me. I can’t educate everyone. Perhaps a better person would have.

That might make me party pooper, but I am a safe person. Trans folks are safe around me. Your kids are safe around me. I am not going to bring people into my life whose politics I do not know. Politics is that important. I absolutely chose my values over your potential friendship. It is easy.

Nat @njcherne.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Politics matters to me. Your politics tell me who you are. You don’t get to see both sides anymore. There is a line. When our neighbors are being kidnapped, there is a side. When people are dying, there is a line. So yeah, I am not associating with people who don’t do politics.

Nat @njcherne.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
This is the privilege we talk about. The privilege to avoid politics. I have never held that privilege. Are they nice? Sure. Are they kind? No. They are not safe people. They are not people I would invite to my parties. If I invite you to my inner circle, you have been vetted. I have accessed you.

I had a not so comfy interaction with an older couple from Savage at my god mom’s 80th birthday party. I mentioned how much I admired the work their rep does and how hard he fought against ICE. They told me they don’t talk politics. I left the table 🧵

The women around you are talking about the Cornell 7. Millennials remember speaking up. We tried to fix it. I am so sorry Gen Z. We wanted better for you.

Who is talking about the Cornell 7? Men, this affects you too. Talk about it. Rape culture is alive and well.

We live in a society that demands woman take the burden of their safety. We are held responsible if something happens. We can do all the right things and still blame ourselves bc we are taught to take responsibility. But the woman at Cornell did nothing wrong. Neither did I. Neither did you.

Sometimes I think about all the precautions I take as a woman. I share my location with trusted friends. I have a car that unlocks as I walk to it. I carry my bag close to me. I don’t wear head phones at night. I park close to the door and light. There are more. These are automatic. 1/2

Just last night I remembered another reason why you all need to make sure you get out to vote this year. In 2024, Wisconsin beat us in voter turnout and that is *unacceptable*. We can't let that happen again. www.mprnews.org/story/2025/0...

Wisconsin squeaks past Minnesota for the top spot in voter turnout

Not the point. What a system could do is reduce crime. We could house people. We could give people opportunities to get job training. We could have universal health care. Crime doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens out of scarcity. We don’t need billionaires when poverty exists.

I am upset. I am upset that we live in a society where people have to rob others for food. Where people don’t have a place to sleep. I am upset that we do not demand more from our government. I am and will be okay. But the next person they rob might not be.

Nat @njcherne.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
And I hold space for feeling violated. Life is hard. Free third spaces are hard to find. People are hungry. To be fair to them, I was going to take an edible and eat banana bread too. Hope they enjoy it. We can reduce preventive crime. We could house people, give them food, and job training.

Nat @njcherne.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
People sleep on the street bc they don’t have homes. They rob bc they don’t have a job. It is easy for me to be upset-and I am. It is harder for me to hold compassion for them-I am trying. I can understand why people do bad things. I don’t like it. Perhaps they had a harder life than me.

Nat @njcherne.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
I don’t keep many valuables in my car. So the robbers took my banana bread and edibles but left my books. Since I forgot to lock my car, I don’t have broken windows. I am not blaming anyone bc this is a systemic issues. 🧵

If you see them by Vicki Sololik is a must read. I don’t say this lightly. Youth homelessness is complex and they need so much support. Vicki cares deeply and used her privilege to help one kid which grew into an organization to help young people #booksky
If you see them book cover by Vicki Sokolik. Cover is orange with white type font and features a student with a backpack.

This book is simply gorgeous. I am not a sci fi person but this book is a nice balance of science and non science, meaning you do not have to have a space background to read it. What a surprise joy for me to read #booksky

The half has never been told by Edward E Baptist will be a classic book in understanding American capitalism. This is a hard read. It is heavy and necessary to learn the full impacts of slavery & how it is still here in a different form, ie prison labor. Highly recommend #booksky #nonfiction

When progressives win, we celebrate people getting services. When conservatives win we worry what services will people lose. We are not the same.

Does Angie Craig have policy priorities besides "fight Donald Trump" which she's had ample opportunity to do & has failed spectacularly at? Peggy Flanagan has been campaigning on Medicare for All, childcare affordability, no more money for endless wars, etc. What's Craig's plans?

Reading guides are helpful if you read the book, especially for dense texts. I get so much enjoyment from reading. I am calmer bc I ask myself why is something happening. Reading helps me put hard situations in perspective.
