This is from our recent vacation in Maui, Hawai. We were there a couple of days ago… being in Hawai is like standing at the edge of the world because you can see the horizon more than 180 degrees. It’s surreal. Like standing on a coin…no picture can capture it. #photography

Countries should manage their inherent demographic balance otherwise there will be strife. That’s why India enacted the CAA, an Act restricting immigration of a certain community. Singapore’s been doing it for ages. It’s common sense but people living in their own intellectual bubble can’t see it.
Singapore actively manages its citizenship and immigration process to reflect and maintain its existing demographic balance. The government utilizes the CMIO framework-which
categorizes the population into
Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Others (Eurasian)—to ensure that the intake of new citizens closely aligns with the national average, preserving the country's multicultural foundation. o

Now apparently #AI firms are hiring philosophers! What next! Below is an excerpt from an editorial in The Economist.
AI models' values are very different from those of most people, The Economist's data team has found. Big Al firms are hiring philosophers to help make their models wiser, which may help.
We suggest principles that governments should apply to reduce the risk of catastrophic harm from AI and to deal with the social and economic consequences as they become clearer. But there is a risk that, as the topic becomes politically explosive, politicians will impose clumsy rules, making it harder to reap the technology's vast potential benefits, or allowing China, which is only a few months behind, to get to superintelligence first and become the world's dominant power.

I grew up in a milieu where cousin marriages were illegal & taboo, although I knew certain communities were allowed by law to do it. There's debate in the UK of late, & to my surprise, cousin marriages are legal in many parts of the developed world. China bans it completely for ALL communities.
A graph showing that cousin marriages are legal in Australia, S. America, and in many parts of Europe and America while completely banned in China. Hardly any countries criminalise it although it's a crime in India for Hindus in many parts of India.

The editor, The Economist, says no point demonising the Right. It's not just in Europe but also in Japan that the Right is rising. Some Right politicians are appalling but not all. To counter them, just claiming that they will bring about the end of the world will not work.
Think back to the presidential campaign Joe Biden (and then Kamala Harris) fought against Donald Trump. The Biden camp's clinching argument was supposed to be that Mr Trump was a threat to democracy and the Republic. It didn't wash: Mr Trump took back power with a bigger share of the vote than in 2016, when he beat Hillary Clinton.
I was reminded of all that in our cover package on the European populist right this week. As we report, support for the Alternative for Germany., National Rally and Reform UK is surging. In response, the very respectable leaders of Britain, France and Germany have warned of the catastrophe facing Europe. Just last week, Britain's prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, told Zanny Minton Beddoes, The Economist's editor-in-chief, that Reform UK was a challenge to "the very essence of who we are as a nation"
The doctrines of the populist right do indeed contain much to condemn. Yet talking about them in apocalyptic terms is destined to fail. The doom-mongering of mainstream politicians smacks of an attempt to draw attention away from their own failures in office. Given the strikingly normal way Giorgia Meloni is running Italy, their apocalyptic predictions are not credible.
For their own sake, and for the good of their countries, mainstream politicians and their supporters urgently need a different approach

Lee Kuan Yew was a Singaporean statesman and the founding father of the modern Singaporean state. This is a quote of his:
A quote which says: "Mine is a very matter-of-fact approach to the problem. If you can select a population and they're educated and they're properly brought up, then you don't have to use too much of the stick because they would already have been trained. It's like with dogs. You train it in a proper way from small. It will know that it's got to leave, go outside to pee and to defecate. No, we are not that kind of society. We had to train adult dogs who even today deliberately urinate in the lifts."
