Me, choking on the fumes as fascists burn the last acre of the Amazon rainforest: "At least this will be good for bond yields!"
Screenshot from Financial Times story on Brazilian elections. Text reads: "William Jackson, chief emerging market economist at Capital Economics, said Sunday’s result would be welcomed by investors, given the possibility of tighter fiscal policy under Bolsonaro and reforms that could lift growth.

“It’s plausible that we see a strong rally in the Brazilian real and the stock market,” he added. “We’re also likely to see further declines in local currency government bond yields in the coming days.”"

1/ Burnham’s Conference Speech: Positive signs for progressive politics, but the work isn’t done. 🧵 It’s been a tumultuous summer with a new PM. Continuing themes set out over the summer, Andy Burnham told Labour conference the country has been on the wrong path for 40 years.
A screenshot of a news headline from The Guardian. The top category text in red reads "Andy Burnham". The headline reads, "‘He feels more relatable’: Burnham’s conference speech wins praise from drifting Labour voters". Subheading: "The UK prime minister has earned his party a rehearing but the battle of public opinion is not yet won". Byline: Luke Tryl, published Saturday, 3 October 2026.

If you're a teacher at a state school or college in London, Derby or Sheffield and want a university philosopher to come in get on touch!

One interesting thing about this song is that Leonard Cohen explicitly described it as an admiration of terrorism, but they will still play it on BBC radio

I know part of the story is higher standards of safety meaning crumple zones etc. Maybe also a collective action problem of not wanting to be the smallest car on the road?

With three kids fair enough, but more generally it's interesting that average family size is falling, society is becoming less car-centric, but cars are getting bigger. What's going on here? Just higher standards for comfort?

From the people I follow on here I see the outlines of a political programme that nobody in politics caters to, a kind of anti-populism: Higher taxes, higher immigration, heavy regulation of big tech, less regulation on other markets (esp building), anti-fascist but sceptical of woke shibboleths

Batter should be trying to keep the ball on the grass so they can't be caught out - or, if they do hit it in the air, hit far away from the fielder. Because of the pace of the ball he's not decided which of these to do, and mistimed his shot so it's given an easy catch.

Fundamentally, no social democratic party worth its salt and with any sort of historical memory should be incapable of, when seeing fascism re-rear its head, instantly recognising it as the greatest evil, the most existential threat, there is.

Gordon Brown comes across very well in this interview, though I do feel the journalist has a duty to tell us what exactly these jokes were www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Screenshot of text reading: He listens to podcasts and participates in philosophical discussion. His jokes are highbrow and niche. There’s one about 1960s Labour party entryism, another about Austrian economists, and one about 1970s rock bands I didn’t understand. I notice he has a slightly seesawing walk as we return from the charity, but remarkable stamina given we haven’t had lunch (he demolished a Tunnock’s teacake, scrunching the foil into his pocket).

Pretty sad commentary on this website that this has 400+ reposts and AFAICS no one has pointed out that it is obviously completely invented. The "average person" (median world income) is up more than 3-fold (200+%). World GDP per capita also up a lot but by less.
