If you're taking to the streets to protest, know your rights.
"KNOW YOUR PROTEST RIGHTS: You don't need a permit to protest in response to breaking news and you don't need a permit to march in the streets or along sidewalks, as long as you're not obstructing traffic or access to buildings. You have the right to photograph or film anything in plain view, including federal buildings and law enforcement, so long as you are not trespassing or violating a lawful order. You should not interfere with the actions of the government officials you are recording. If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact information for witnesses, and take photographs of any injuries. If you get stopped by the police, ask if you're free to go. If they say yes, calmly walk away. If you get arrested, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don't sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present. If you get stopped by a member of the military or any law enforcement officer at a protest, you have the right to remain silent or to tell them that you'll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney-no matter your citizenship or immigration status.""If you interact with ICE in public: Ask if you are free to leave. If so, you may calmly walk away. You have the right to refuse consent to a search. You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to discuss your immigration status with anyone, such as about where you were born, whether you are a citizen, or how you entered the country. If you have valid immigration documents, you should show them. Never provide fake documents. If you are arrested, say that you wish to remain silent until speaking with a lawyer. You have the right to record your interaction with immigration agents as long as you do not interfere."

It's been one year since I first got this poinsettia as a tiny lil grocery store plant, and it has been an absolute joy to watch it slowly change color over the last few weeks!
A large branching poinsettia. The lower two thirds is green, with the top leaves a bright scarlet red.

My walk to the metro has been looking real colorful! #fallfoliage
A couple gorgeous trees with red and burnished orange leaves against a bright blue sky. A low-hanging branch of possibly maple leaves. The leaves are all multicolored with shades of deep red, yellow, and green marbling each leaf.

AFTER A YEAR OF SCIENTIFIC SCRUTINY, A ROCK SAMPLE ON MARS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED TO CONTAIN A POTENTIAL BIOSIGNATURE!!!!
A self-portrait photo of the Perseverance rover on the surface of Mars, taken with a camera on its robotic arm. The six-wheel rover sits in a rocky desert landscape. Its robotic "head" is pointed down to one rock where there is a small hole drilled, along with a small pile of light-colored tailings from the drill.A close-up photo of layered rocks. Between two layers, in reddish mudstone, are small, dark spots, slightly lighter at the middle of each spot.

A spread of five books and a white canvas tote bag which reads "Politics and Prose Bookstore Independent Bookstore Day Saturday, April 26, 2025. The books displayed are Eat & Enjoy Gluten Free, Moby-Duck (not a typo, this book really is about bath toys lost at sea), and three volumes of The Murderbot Diaries which are the editions with two stories per each volume.

The article from my first post compares the cost of college with the cost of NCCC. Let me just say this: what I learned in 10 months of NCCC FEMA Corps did more for my personal growth than 4 years of college. And that's not even looking at the value of the projects we completed for communities.

Nikita Kuckuck @nikitakuckuck.bsky.social · 16/04/2025
I wasn't just learning hard skills, either. During my time in NCCC FEMA Corps, I got to work day in and day out with people from all corners of the country, developing teamwork and leadership skills, growing my curiosity and empathy, learning new strategies for problem-solving.

During my 10 month term, my team assisted with the grant-writing process for public infrastructure damaged by natural disasters, mostly roads damaged by flooding. I learned so much about flood damage, the recovery process, and the impacts on small communities.

This is devastating. This program isn't just about providing service to communities (although that's certainly a major focus), but also hands-on learning and growth and development of young people. I did a term with NCCC FEMA Corps shortly after college, and it helped shape who I am today.
