Oh and finally, of course I managed to share the wrong image 💀 In 2011 there was a month where there were two who's hiring posts because the automatic script HN used broke, and the chart shows the official (but "wrong") data post. This is the one with the canonical post as a source:

Seeing this month's "who is hiring" post on HN, I had a fun idea to visualize the data points over the years as I expected them to be a nice visualization of the current market in tech. Earlier this year was the first month ever in which less people posted jobs than wanted to be hired 🫠
A graph showing the relation between job-seeker posts and job posts on HN per month since 2014 (seeking divided by offering). The ratio between seekers and offers was about 0.4ish for a few years, briefly peaked to about 0.9 in 2020 before dropping back down, and sharpy started rising again in 2023, with the highest ever ratio of about 1.2 last month. The graph shows two lines, one for offers and one for seekers. Job postings have noticably gone down and seekers up, with the lines crossing for the first time ever this year (more seekers than offers).

The @npmx.dev timeline feature is so genius. Makes me so happy to see these green checks on my packages. It also helped me discover that a dependency of mine went from 49 to 139 dependencies in a single update, which I'd have totally missed otherwise ❤️

@matthiasott.com I *love* the little sliders on your website, but I think the mouse interaction is odd: When I drag them in a circular motion, the arrow doesn't track the mouse, and at some point it goes backwards... Sharing because I think this isn't intended? :)

Wonderful use case for AI in frontend curtesy of @samwho.dev: Let the LLM generate controls to play around until things look right, then remove them again. I would usually be too lazy to do this by hand, but its one of these things where the workflow improves but the output doesn't suffer. 10/10

my upcoming blog post will be spooky... okay, maybe not

Ripple effect in pure CSS using a combination of filters, blurs, contrast and blend modes. CodePen: codepen.io/editor/NikxD... Chrome & Safari only for now, Firefox does not want to animate the custom property correctly :)

Had an absolutely lovely call with @samwho.dev last night and halfway through he pulls up the Google Meet controls on his iPad to find... this abomination of a menu 💀 It gets worse the longer you look at it...

Earlier this week, I learned from @patrickbrosset.com that DevTools in Chrome and Firefox are built using web technologies. That means that yes, you can inspect Chrome DevTools using Chrome DevTools 🤯

TIL: CSS variables can contain non-ASCII characters. That means that yes, you can have emoji in a CSS variable name, and yes, zero width spaces are valid, too... in case you want to spice up your stylesheets!

@benholmen.com made it to #1 of HN with @kilopx.com – and with it, by pure chance, my little cat drawing. What are the odds! Congrats on how well the project is received over there, well deserved :)

Daily reminder that AI is still terrible at producing sources
An AI web search for the question "What is 1+1", with the answer citing "reliable sources"A source being the music video for "Beyonce - 1+1" on YouTube.

Opinions are divided on this one for sure, but I need to rant about the new macOS design. Why would the sidebars float? Why would they be translucent if the background it now sits above is white? Everything about this looks so off, and I will hate having to look at it every day once Tahoe releases.

Promised I'd share some of the small quality of life updates I've been working on this weekend. Up first is the ability to link to specific headings with a small link that pops out to the left on hovering!

Here's a version with a persistent progress that sort of acts as a flashlight. As with anything, there are endless options to iterate!

Exploring the idea of a table of contents which I've always liked. This got me thinking that instead of a separate progress indicator, the whole element could be an indicator in itself. Some `clip-path` magic later, this seems interesting! Not quite where I want it yet, but it's a nice little idea

Got this cute little demo working 😍 Especially proud of the fact that it has a nice border shape in line with the other objects on the page, and that the overlaps are properly sized (even the MDN docs get this wrong!)

There's so many things that can be explored here, from rocket trails to effect behavior (sparkles, flickering, dropoff, size, colors). I think this could be a great gateway to canvas / particles for beginners, as it's super easy to get started but there are endless possibilities to iterate 🎉

Dabbling in fireworks, inspired by @joshwcomeau.com's Whimsy landing page. He does a _lot_ more in his implementation than I do here, but it's a very fun thing to explore!
