Could you redraw the diagram with USA as a separate slice, not as part of NATO?

#OTD in 1818, Maria Mitchell was born. She was the first professional female astronomer in the U.S. On 1 Oct 1847 she discovered a comet, later known as "Miss Mitchell's Comet" in her honor (today named C/1847 T1). Image: H. B. Dassel portrait of Maria Mitchell, ca. 1851 Public D. 🔭 🧪 #HistSci
Portrait of Maria Mitchell by Herminia Borchard Dassel (1821-1857), ca. 1851. Maria wears a dark dress with a white collar, and probably scans the sky through a telescope.

I love the idea of a flying bishop! Sort of like the Flying Doctor, arrives in his private helicopter? What happens when a real bishop meets an anti-Bishop*? Do they explode and annihilate each other in a massive burst of energy? * I'm sure that's not the technical term

Are there still any of those around? An awful* lot of bishops (and Archbishop) seem to be female these days. * as in "inspiring great awe, in a good way ",

To be fair, there are an awful lot of horses kept as pets these days. I often see the mobile farrier down the lane. Don't understand it myself, cats can keep you warm at night, but generally you can only get a part of a horse in bed with you.

Well, yes. They called it "infant paralysis" until the mid? 1800s so technically "polio" didn't exist.

Rope culture? Like lassos n stuff? Well, it's all traditional culture, I suppose, like wrastling a steer. We're grown-ups, so please call a digging implement a digging implement. They're (allegedly) rapists. Trump is a convicted rapist.

Harold was in many ways the ideal suitor: old and very, very rich. His blindness, which meant that he always missed when trying to grope Lucretia's knee, was a bonus.

Years back, some company decided to reward developers based on the number of lines of code they wrote. another based bonuses on the number of bugs you found and fixed in your own code. Ho hum.

That too... And hostile forces don't even need to damage the reactors - just the non-radioactive bits that let the electricity out into the world.

Nigel Ó Ceallacháin @nigelcallaghan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
This goes deeper. Government are still desperately keen to build more nuclear power stations. Forget the cost arguments, strategically bad. A few hostile missiles and we've lost 10% of our electricity supply. Distributed power - solar PV, small turbines, + batteries is almost invulnerable.

They were Israeli military. They were heavily armed. How can they have been overwhelmed? Couldn't they just call in a missile strike? Or run over the #Zionist terrorists in a tank? And if the terrorists were 'violent' no question. Bomb them to dust. Palestinian kids are shot for holding a stone.

A simple start is taxing/banning their water wastage. There is no technical reason for data centres to need to use lots of water. They use it for cooling and lose 80% through evaporation. Which is cheap. Require a closed system, recover all the vapour for re-use. £50/cu.m. after that.

How are IT 'professionals' so incompetent? New designs, new code, great. But only if it makes a better system than before. And ALWAYS make sure that old urls redirect smoothly to the new one (at detailed record level) and return a 301 response. And how complicated is an image viewer?

So, why were they arrested and charged then? Lesson: be very, very careful about how you draft legislation. Think of ALL the possibilities and cover them. Be very, very precise. But words are worthless until some action is taken to undo the damage, and compensate those arrested.

If you live in a neighbourhood where nutters grab cats off the street to torture them, you really need to move to a safer neighborhood. What do they do to people?

Nigel Ó Ceallacháin @nigelcallaghan.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
If its not safe for the cats to go out, maybe people should move to somewhere where it is? Or just keep a hamster.

I only visited Glasgow a couple of times. What impressed me was that the Students Union had a disco for the dentists on, midweek, middle of term, and they had a 4am licence! We used to get one a year, for the Union Ball! Very laid back council in Glasgow!

Interestingly, when I started at the university of St Andrews in Scotland back in the seventies, a pass at GCE (exams at 15) in a language was a entry requirement and a pass in first year Philosophy was mandatory for any degree in the Arts Faculty.

Well, my first degree was in Astronomy, my career has been in IT, and my masters was in Welsh Social History. If I ever get round to it, my PhD will also be on C19 Welsh history. Meanwhile I'm still cutting code. Tbf, people do say I seem to live in my own little universe!
