It’s finally not too early for us to have our decorations up. I haven’t had these up for a month or anything….

White brick fire place with the bangle covered in Halloween tchotchkes and statuettes. Two witches hats hang on either end, a couple pumpkins sit on the floor in front with 2 cloth cats dressed in orange and 2 other black wooden cats.

3 antique clocks sit on top of an antique upright piano with scrollwork and red velvet backing. In front of the clocks is a Halloween town village. On either side are two vintage witch statues

White decoration tree with green, purple, and orange lights. Topped with a green witches head and black branches spiking out. Decorated with various black flowers, orange swirlie things, little brooms, skills, cauldrons, pins, etc., all in black, orange, and green

Relistening to Black Sun by @rebeccaroanhorse.bsky.social and it is every bit as amazing as I remember it being the first time. This story blows me away, and the narration is perfection. Just got to the end of Chapter 20, and once again stopped what I was doing to just listen in rapt attention.

book cover of Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse.
black backround, at the topin small print is "Roanhorse is the epic voice of our continent and time" - Ken Liu
Large golden title across the middle, on bottom left is slightly smaller author name and "New York Times BestSelling Author"
On the right side is an eclipsed sun with the bottom half of a face (mostly bottom of nose, and lips, jaw, chin) merged into the body of a crow in flight (head and beak pointing up from the nose of the face). Above the crow is a sparkling of gold stardust

Working and have Jurassic Park on as background. Only half watching, but I always wonder: who is this kid and how’s he on a dig in Montana? And why wasn’t I ever on a dig for dinosaur bones ever??

Close up of an approximately 10-12yr old white boy with short brown hair and light blue/gray eyes, wearing a gray, white, and red striped shirt and a black baseball cap. Standing in a Montana desert landscape with a skeptical look on his face (boy from start on Jurassic Park that challenged Dr. Grant)

I'm very behind on my for-pleasure reading (though I did do an Ilona Andrews month, where I re-read all their books and loved every minute). But I've just started The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig.

I loved Sam Neill in Jurassic Park and Event Horizon and so many other things, but I just can't forget him as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in The Tudors.

Sam Neill as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey wearing a red cardinal cassock and biretta with gold livery chain and cross, appearing to speak confidentially to Jonathan Rhys-Myers as Henry VIII wearing a black doublet with intricate gold embroidery adorned with pearls on the chest and puffed sleeves, a black cap with more gold and pearl embroidery, and a gold chain.

Yesterday was one of those hard days when I felt abandoned by my family because of something they did. I shrug off the feeling pretty quickly usually. But this morning i woke up to a post it on my computer from my wife and my tea cup ready and waiting for me and it reminded me that I made my family

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews I could not read through this quickly enough, and I loved it so much, I'm already re-reading. Portal fantasy meets Game of Thrones, with a FMC that won't let it stay that dark - no matter how many times she has to die to change it.

Cover image of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews. The left side is taken up with some large, beaked animal with wings and blue eyes. The right shows a large tower, topped by some sort of flower petals. In the background is a city with a castle and turrets and bridges straight out of fantasy. Three circles (representing the three moons of the fantasy world) are in the sky.

The Great Flood (Netflix) Honestly, getting two amazing movies in one year is not something I expected anymore. This movie subverted my expectations and blew my mind. I loved every moment of this sci-fi disaster movie.

Shows a woman falling under water(?) with a child (?) in her arms, between two high rise buildings. As it goes lower, the buildings seems to turn to light.

The Inheritance by Ilona Andrews I know this was serialized before being published, but as I can't read anything serial format, this was fresh to me when I picked up the book, and I loved it. The portal worlds, the hint of deeper danger, the politics, and all the post-apocalypse I could wish for

Which neatly leads into, The Wheel of Time (TV show) - this is both a source of great joy, and my biggest (entertainment) disappointment this year with it not getting renewed. I'm devastated by what we lost with this show being cancelled. What it gave us, and could have given us, was amazing.

Wheel of Time - by Robert Jordan I started this series the 1st time many years ago, and finally really dug in when the show was announced. I finished early this year. The reading experience was one of the most enjoyable & satisfying I've had, and I am so glad I experienced it with the friends I did.

We’re True Lawful Plantser for sure. We have outlines, know our characters inside out, and know the end, but we go off on tangents and often our story characters take us interesting places

Writing Style Alignment Chart (9-square)

First row:
Lawful Pantser
- Writes everything in order
- Uses the flashlight method to get to the end
- Ends up in strange places
- knows random details no one else cares about
Neutral Pantser
- Writes things as they come to them.
- not afraid to bounce around.
- knowing the end makes it boring
Chaotic Pantser
- Writes completely out of order.
- what the fuck is a plot?
- loves side fiction, and writes whatever they're excited about.

Second row:
Lawful Plantser
- Knows the ending, writes toward it
- loves to worldbuild
- uses character bios/has definitely taken personality tests for their characters
True Plantser
- Starts an outline
- goes off script and ends up in unexpected places.
- but that's okay cause this is more interesting anyway
Chaotic Plantser
- Has an idea of the plot when they start.
- who writes things down??
- has to assemble scenes into a frankendraft

Third row:
Lawful Plotter
- Has detailed character bios
- Multi-page outline organized by scene/chapter
- probably knows what colour socks their MC
wears on tuesdays
Neutral Plotter
- Brief outline.
- Likes to use beat sheets
- Modifies and updates outline as they go.
- Thinks about writing character bios, rarely does
Chaotic Plotter
- Writes scenes on little cards and tries to organize them on a board.
- Writes said scenes out of order.
- Copy and paste is your friend

The Expanse is amazing. Season 1 was harder for me to get into, but after that I was hooked - and she is one of four of my absolute favorites on that show.

Shohreh Aghdashloo as Chrisjen Avasarala on The Expanse. Walking through a snowy landscape with a ready to kick ass expression and body language. She wears an amazing red and orange dress and cape. The cape is trimmed with faux red fur draped around her head as the hood is up.

Wes Chatham as Amos Burton on The Expanse. Seated in a room with some exo-suits, in a sleeveless black shirt. Tattoos on his arms. He looks up with a questioning eyebrow as he messes with some electronics in his hands. He has a full beard and short dark hair.

Cara Gee as Camila Drummer on The Expanse. Seated with arms crossed staring you down. Dramatic black eyeliner accentuates her stare and you know she means business.

Frankie Adams as Bobbie Draper (Gunny) on The Expanse, seated in a gym doing bicep curls in a black/grey tank and black leggings
