"Whenever researchers decide...what questions to ask, which instruments...to use, what stat methods to apply & how to interpret results, they are engaging in philosophical reasoning...Understood in this light, philosophy is an ally to science & both are made stronger by their interaction" #philsci 🧪

I don't disagree with the issue raised here, but just FYI for PUIs with ACS subscriptions the OA publishing fee is waived: acsopenscience.org/customers/ac...

One frustration I have about my work as a prof is there very little reward for good pedagogy (beyond knowing it is the right thing to do and students getting a valuable experience). For example, I teach first-year chemistry and I incorporate an information literacy project in the Spring quarter.

This paper is probably one of the most important things I will ever work on. It would never have happened without this team. Every day I feel truly lucky that I get to work closely with undergraduates in class and in research. This would not have been possible without their ideas and efforts.

After the initial team had moved on, Elizabeth really took up the helm on this piece and made sure this project was seen through--I can't praise her thoughtfulness and dedication enough! And Tia jumped in on the final confirmatory steps needed to get this out into the world.

Then, one of most uplifting, fulfilling, and heartbreaking parts of doing research with undergrads happened: they graduated. Undergrads are such a joy to work with, the worst part is that they leave so soon! All went on to graduate programs and are doing fantastically, and I am so proud of them.

As junior/senior undergrads, Josie, Kodinna, and Henry were integral to outlining the research questions and paradigm we use in this study. They also undertook the imposing task of finding and screening over 4,000 articles. I was and am humbled by their stamina and dedication!

I am truly indebted to my co-authors. This project would not exist without the undergraduates I have the privilege of working with every day. The initial idea of this project came from co-author Josie, a then-sophomore, who often mentioned her passion for science inclusivity.

One of the most challenging projects I've ever undertaken is out! This study integrates interdisciplinary scholarship to develop a comprehensive description of deficit and anti-deficit framing--tools to improve scientific accessibility and student outcomes. #chemsky pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

How Perspective Directs Outcomes: The Structure and Function of Deficit and Anti-deficit Framing and Their Relevance to Chemistry Education
The existence of differential educational outcomes as a function of students’ background is well-established and especially severe in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Differen...

My PhD was at the interface of physics and chemistry so I've always been split between ACS and APS. I've been impressed with APS's response lately. Most recently: www.aps.org/about/news/2...

I had mine in LaTeX for a long time and I migrated it to word. I think word is easier to update and maintain for it, and less formatting hassle. You can also make word look like LaTeX if the aesthetics are what you're after 😅

Thanks! I've been here for a few months, maybe almost a year? But haven't been very active.
