"Whenever researchers decide...what questions to ask, which instruments...to use, what stat methods to apply & how to interpret results, they are engaging in philosophical reasoning...Understood in this light, philosophy is an ally to science & both are made stronger by their interaction" #philsci 🧪

One frustration I have about my work as a prof is there very little reward for good pedagogy (beyond knowing it is the right thing to do and students getting a valuable experience). For example, I teach first-year chemistry and I incorporate an information literacy project in the Spring quarter.

One of the most challenging projects I've ever undertaken is out! This study integrates interdisciplinary scholarship to develop a comprehensive description of deficit and anti-deficit framing--tools to improve scientific accessibility and student outcomes. #chemsky pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

How Perspective Directs Outcomes: The Structure and Function of Deficit and Anti-deficit Framing and Their Relevance to Chemistry Education
The existence of differential educational outcomes as a function of students’ background is well-established and especially severe in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Differen...

Delighted to announce that one of the original research studies from my PhD project is now available as a preprint! Anyone interested in bridging the research-practice gap would be interested in my findings on how educational intervention developers use evidence in their work: osf.io/preprints/ps...

My PhD was at the interface of physics and chemistry so I've always been split between ACS and APS. I've been impressed with APS's response lately. Most recently: www.aps.org/about/news/2...
