PhD in paleobotany. I'm working on fossil wood from the Cenozoic. I'm interested in anatomical evolution, biogeography and paleoenvironments.

🌿🪨 #PaleoBotanyWeek Persistence of Gondwanan woods in Myanmar through the Palaeogene by Gentis and co-authors. #freeaccess article 👉 doi.org/p6mt @nicolasgentis.bsky.social #Paleobotany #PlantEvolution #Botany
Fossil wood from Myanmar reveals that tropical Asian forests were shaped by ancient plant migrations from Gondwana. The study shows that some lineages spread from Africa to India and Southeast Asia during the early Palaeogene, forming a now-extinct floristic province that played a key role in the assembly of modern tropical floras.

Teaching tropical #wood anatomy today. Look at this gorgeous #Andira (Fabaceae) and this nice aliform-confluent parenchyma pattern ! I only took the picture with my phone. It's all visible with a naked eye.

This is the third paper from my thesis 👏. This time focusing on paleobiogeographical interpretations with 6 unique species. Fossil wood is a treasure trove of information waiting to be unearthed 🌳. Many thanks to @annbot.bsky.social for this thread #fossilwood #paleobotany #gondwana

Amazing workshop last week in Arles, focused on how integrating geological and paleoclimatological constraints in phylogenetic and biogeographic reconstructions! 11 countries, 55 people, and 3 days of talks and brainstorming with a balanced group of biologists, geologists and climatologists.

This is my PhD trophy (a tradition in our team) and I LOVE it! I've indeed worked partly on Dipterocarpaceae... which explains the fruit. #wood #phd
The base of the trophy is a thick section of a Juniperus stump, on the left side stands a ring made of Eucalyptus and in the center of the ring is a fruit of Dipterocarpus.

Not a fossil for #fossilfriday but another #watercolor illustration from the Middle Miocene of Myanmar done by my mother. You can see Dipterocarps in full bloom, a Dipterocarpus and an Artocapus. #paleoart
A tropical forest seen from the canopy with a river delta in the horizon and a big monsoon cloud. Blossoming tree in the middle, a Dipterocarpus on the left with fruits and an Artocarpus with fruit on the right.

For #FossilFriday here is a mandala of some raw fragments of fossil wood. You have Fabaceae, Moraceae and Dipterocarpaceae here. #paleobotany #wood #fossil

I also called on the Herbonautes community to computerize the #Dipterocarpaceae labels of the Paris #herbarium #mnhn. This is indeed a powerful and exciting initiative.

I can finally say I experienced one of the computer crashes that MUST happen right before submitting the thesis manuscript. The pdf is corrupted AND the original file has disappeared. 😬😱
