Still living in 200X I'm a professional UI designer / programmer working on an indie game in my free time. I also do a lot of 3D modeling. #godot #blender #gamedev #indiedev #art

Thanks! I probably have the original patch with the crash, as I found it a few years ago. I hadn't played it yet, so I'll make sure to use this one instead. Deleted the original post since my info on V2 and GX was incomplete. Next time I'll do my researcxh before getting excited.

I had just discovered it so I didn't know. Nevermind I guess.

I had no idea about the GX patch. That's disappointing.

I was surprised about GX too. But it's complete. V2 is weird. I guess the group making that patch had a falling out. There are unfinished betas of that patch floating around, and it's playable all the way through. But the text formatting gets worse the further in you go.

I don't highlight my old work here. Mostly because I'm harsh on myself and see the flaws in it. But every time someone discovers my old projects they ask me to open source them. Using my ancient work is not a good idea. I didn't know what I was doing back then. But it's still cool that people care.

It's not as hard as it sounds. The controller guts need to be removed. Then you take the plastic parts for the buttons and shell and wash them by hand. It's not like I'm throwing the pcb in the sink. Just everything else.

Also, yes I still use a dualshock 3. The early units used magnetic sticks before they were cool, so they don't drift. Also they work on linux out of the box and the batteries are easy to replace.

You should deep clean your game controllers once in a while. I do it all the time, but there's a thing you should know about dualshock 3s specifically. The 2 pcbs inside are connected by a contact pad. Make sure the screws are tight or else the button board will start disconnecting and acting weird.

Boss 3 is finished. Not going to show it just yet but I really like how it turned out.

You ever get the feeling that others just don't like the things you like for the reasons you do? That's me right now.

That's because when designing a game, you typically have to keep the length of the game in mind, and if you remove 1 way of making it longer, that length is going to creep back in using other design elements instead.
000
Nick West @nickwestdev.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
That is because the designer has to consider that you only have 3 tries going in. On the flipside, look at any stage designed without lives as a constraint. There are hazards everywhere.

Look at any stage from a game with lives and try to find the lava. You'll find that there aren't as many spikes or pits as there are in modern platformers.

Most environment art I've shown is from level1. There's a reason for that. Starting out I needed to learn how to make maps. After level1 I built tools to make the process faster. This room took a week and most of it was time spent making modular tiles #godot #gamedev #indiedev #screenshotsaturday

Most levels get their own tileset. But that doesn't always mean what it sounds like. Not every tile is a tile. Sometimes it's a model that occupies a slot. And tiles can have their materials switched. I can mix tilesets together too. So each stage will look unique, but they'll often borrow things.

Time attack is a big part of my game, and I found a problem. If this boss does not use a certain move, you're not getting the best time. So you can now bait it into charging by running away. Then you can use the boom box weapon (it's weakness!) and knock it over #godot #gamedev #screenshotsaturday

Years ago I built a skybox tool in blender, and it's still what I use. But it was locked in an older version, because blender updates broke the cloud shader. But now that I've decided to use Blender 3 instead of 4 again, all of my art is on the same version. Clouds included. Silver lining I guess.

Yup you can knock this boss out of the sky, pick it up, and throw it at lithium crates now.

I'm programming another boss and because of how I structured enemies I was accidentally able to pick it up and throw it. I should turn this off... But I could also make it part of the fight. I think I'm going to follow the fun here.

MegaMan Network Transmission is one of my favorite games. But there are some things it never tells you that you need to know: You can slide under the legs of bosses. Cannons can be a standin for the megabuster until its powered up. Get 30 and make it a regular chip. The penguins drop double jumps.

I hadn't thought about the arena shape much, but you're right. It just kind of felt right since you're moving the analog stick in a circle and also running in circles. So I made it a circle.

All the python scripts work now too.

Make that 1 day. I have successfully backported every model from 4.2 to 3.6 and only 3 of them exploded. Now I just need to make sure my python scripts still work.

The final straw was adding additional bones to my rig, explicitly telling blender to parent them to DEF for the 3rd time, and having IK break on the game side again because the bones got parented to MCH anyway. Every time it does this I have to redo a character scene in godot. No more.

Nick West @nickwestdev.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
I've decided to downgrade blender versions. Somewhere along the line I started using 4.2. Originally I used 3.3. Rigify is way different now. The problem is the amount of extra steps it takes to do anything. Got some NLA tracks to fix, but it'll only take a few days. Time to get my speed back.

I'm at that point where the gizmos stop looking intimidating and just look like the coolest thing ever.
A screenshot of a scene in the godot editor. There's an untextured warehouse room in the scene. In the center is a transform gizmo, a reflection probe, a bunch of baked ambient light probes, and also the main mesh of the scene is outlined purple wireframe. The purple represents the occluder instance. There's also some cyan wireframes under a ledge. Those are part of the navmesh.

I'm making a backup and thought it would be interesting to share the file sizes. Backups come in 2 parts: ProjectSource & AssetSource ProjectSource is the godot project. AssetSource contains all of the source art & sound. ProjectSource is: 943.1 MB AssetSource is: 8.5 GB Both compressed: 4.4 GB

I added an attract mode to the the game. I think this is really underrated teaching tool. There are so many tricks I've learned about games just by watching demos on the title screen. Also, the game has a physical sun now with a lensflare shader. #godot #gamedev #indiedev #screenshotsaturday

I just think lensflares are cool ok? The better question is "what kind of lens is that?"

This is how I used MMF2 most of the time. The engine had me learning about data structures before I even knew how to code.

There's not a sequel because the investors think a remake will sell more copies.

Andross from Starfox. Back when I was first learning 3D modeling I made this by eyeballing footage from the SNES game. It's one of my first models in Blender. #blender #art #StarFox
