Definitely on the high end for them, but no complaints. They’ve had some worse, and we do a little reading strategy glance at the start. It’s an upper level seminar.

EXERCISE
OH, YOU’RE WATCHING ME
[QR Code]
Watch someone at work. Look at how they look; attend to how they attend. What can you tell about the way they are dividing up and interpreting the things they see? (You can, of course, ask them.) Sketch the scene—it’s okay if you think you can’t draw, try anyway—and describe the basic operations of the work. Your drawing does not have to be figurative. For one way of doing it, look at Morgan O’Hara’s Live Transmission series at www.morganohara.art/live-transmission.

just fantastic little observations everywhere
them. A benefits analyst described the sensation:

You can't justify anything now; you can't be sure of it or prove it because you have nothing down in writing. Without writing, you can't remember things, you can't keep track of things, there's no reasoning without writing. What we have now—you don't know where it comes from. It just comes at you.

EXERCISE
STAYING PUT: Go to a public place that you already frequent (either on campus, like the student center, or off-campus, like a coffee shop or museum). Stay put for one hour, immerse yourself in the scene, and take notes — as detailed as you can manage — about what surrounds you (you can draw pictures, make diagrams, whatever you like). Pay particular attention to how people in the setting are or are not attending to each other: Are they conspicuously ignoring each other? Seeking people out? How do they communicate their attentional states to each other? How do you know what you know about them? What might you not know? Do you think people are paying attention to you?

setting aside the rarely considered question of how we decide what kinds of change count as "fast" on one side and the fact that, yes, you may need to frequently consider how your principles apply to novel situations on the other

Nick Seaver @nickseaver.website · 21/09/2026
when someone in the university meeting about AI principles suggests that the principles need to change fast because AI changes fast: the nice thing about principles is their durability and generality, such that having AI-specific principles may be at odds with the idea of "principles"

one thing that is worth remember apropos this useful piece is that novel technologies do not necessarily require novel political solutions. americans have had to deal with fast-moving, disruptive technological change in the past, and they did so through collective, democratic action.
