[Cooked meat] @docpop oh man! Chili frito pie was one of my favorite things growing up and I think this is genius.

If I don't keep my car roadworthy and crash into yours, it hasn't gone "rogue", it's my negligence and I'm responsible. If my dog attacks you, I am liable. There are no rogue AIs, just negligent AI companies. Prosecute them.

@matt ActivityPub has always felt more like fancy email to me, since servers are pushing messages to each other. It's definitely better for interactivity. I guess I'm dreaming of an alternate 2000s universe where instead of Twitter, we had easy to use microblog platforms and RSS readers, with […]

Sometimes I get ideas in my head that seem neat, but I realize won't pan out when I think about them hard enough. Like, what if someone made a social media site entirely based on RSS? Could follow anyone else on the site, or literally anything with a feed

If you see ads pointing you to votesafe.org to check your voter registration, read this first. VoteSafe is run by America PAC, Elon Musk's super PAC. It is not a government site. Its own footer says "Paid for by America PAC." It also doesn't register anyone. The flow ends by telling you to […]

This week's been nice and warm, but today was something else. Hit 93 degrees, both outside and inside. Tried sitting out on the back patio to cool off, but it's skeeter city out there.

@matt It's really sad how some people just outsource all their thinking to the machine. One time I asked someone a question that I thought they'd have a good opinion on, and they just feed it straight into an LLM. It felt insulting, like they sent me a lmgtfy.com link.

I think Slack has finally succeeded in replacing email, because now people at work send 3-page-long announcement emails as a Slack message. 🙃

Had to do a repair on my Roomba and I'm kind of shocked how easy they make it. 5 phillips screws to remove the cover, every electromechanical thing is a module that takes 2 screws to remove, no cables to unplug. All captive screws too!

I love how my flying club's maintenance team sends post-mortem emails about issues I report

Screenshot of an email that says:
"Resolution: We have been monitoring this since this squawk came in, but after all of our testing we could not find a clear cause. However, one of the annunciators finally came on so we replaced that vacuum pump and it fixed the issue. Strangely, the pump was still working, but was so worn it was just not pushing enough air to create a good vacuum. Usually when a vacuum pump fails it completely breaks inside. We have never before seen what happened with this one."

Sometimes the "glue work" that senior software engineers do is just getting the right people in one room and walking away while they figure their shit out.

Flew my first end-to-end solo flight today, just some takeoff and landing practice. I still can't believe I'm allowed to take the keys to a plane and fly it around without my instructor. #flying #GeneralAviation #studentpilot

I've liberated the LM940's display and USB cable from its stand and got it mounted under my monitor. Nano tape FTW

Other finds from last weekend's Electronics Flea Market

"Little Guys" - small form factor computers

My partner saw this at a table and was messing with it, and they guy running the table told her "You touched it, it's yours now." He said he was one of the co-founders of Netgear! Said that they moved offices and his boss left this behind, so he swiped it. "His boss" being the other co-founder […]

First Electronics Flea Market of the year! It's amazing how you find stuff you didn't know you needed until you ask about them. Picked up this HP retail display for 5 bux, and a piece of Netgear history.

A 2x20 character display which usually shows the scanned item and price at a cash register, but it says "What up, nerds?" instead

I'm not a fan of transit systems with tracks and stations in the middle of freeways, but boy is it a good advertisement for it when trains go screaming by all the stop and go traffic.

Flew my first cross-country flight as a student pilot yesterday! San Carlos to Paso Robles, CA. Felt like my first "real" flight with all the planning and navigation involved. #flying #aviation

A Cessna 172S high-wing airplane sitting on the ramp at San Carlos. The San Fransciso east bay hills are far in the background. There are high clouds, which are orange from the rising sun.

View from the pilot's seat, at 3500 feet with a view over Silicon Valley. The mountains on the east side of the valley are snow-capped from the cold weather precipitation in the past week.

Pinnacles National Park from 5500 feet. The mountains are sharp, jagged rocks which stick up from the surrounding terrain.
