Also a shout out to @cmfrumin.bsky.social both for coming to the event to support DC Scores *and* for arriving by bike! #bikedc #WeekWithoutDriving

Big, appreciative shout out to the @washingtonspirit.com for the amazing show of support at last night’s fundraising event for #DCScores! The team really stepped up for DCPS poet athletes. Not that I would expect anything less from these great players. #OneNightOneGoal

My kid was just yesterday talking about how he missed getting the paper for the sports section. I guess there’s nothing to miss anymore. ☹️

Just filed comments for DDOT’s ebike/scooter regs (N146433). If DDOT is going to require companies to limit speeds on sidewalks, companies should be required to share data with DDOT on sidewalk use and @ddotdc.bsky.social should be required to use that data to make improvements to bike lanes.

DDOT confirmed in an email that they’re waiting on ‘striping season’ next year to do the lanes, hence the non-bike lane striping that just went in SE of the circle.

Turns out you can’t renew your DC drivers license online more than once in a row. The DMV website is not at all clear on this point, and when you go to renew online the way the system lets you know about this restriction is by throwing up a generic payment error at the last step in the process.

I’m sure others here will disagree, but an Abus-style combo lock for medium security situations is awfully convenient. Not having to carry keys around is a plus for me.

I think you’re right about the trail extension, though obviously that is not a useful/good lane. And much of the rest of 2nd is actively bad for biking. (And yes, northbound, but great to hear about 7th!)

Google Maps really doesn’t want you to bike on 6th St NE and really does want you to bike on 2nd St NE. Which is weird. 6th is a pretty good route, while 2nd is not good for biking.

Free2Move was not as good as Car2Go but the fact that it’s leaving the District as of today is a loss.

Maybe a simple dashboard with all the facilities and a green/red open/closed indicator?

Nick Burger @nickburgerdc.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
It should be crystal clear to the public whether a facility is open, save for truly unexpected events.

Nick Burger @nickburgerdc.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I don’t know all the backstory here, but is the basic issue “it’s really hard to get clear, reliable information about whether DPR facilities are open”?

It's also not magic beans. It's a word predictor. It's really fast at it and it's even learned to pick the next line in code to make the code do what you want it to, most of the time. (This tends to flatten all art and make it worse, but that's another thing.) But it isn't magic and it's not alive.

You only have to go as far as Philly to see a version of this in the US. Not that extreme, but poor maintenance and different material ever 20-30 feet.

Interesting UX decisions on DC's 311 app. While the Contact Information header says optional and you can skip all of these fields, if you add an email address the last name field becomes required with minimal cues it changed.
Contact information screen that says optional in the heading.Contact information screen with Optional in the heading and a Last Name shows a required * symbol.

There are so many examples of these kinds of issues that could be fixed to make all these systems work better for end users. It really cries out for a digital services-type team to do rapid work system by system.

If you’re trying to undermine local DC laws, we should be brave enough to speak up to it every single time, that includes when it’s members of our own political party. Spoke to @washingtonian.com about DC and RCV.

This means that when we move here Trusty’s had only been open for 3 years, but that’s impossible because the floors were already worn and sticky, the board game boxes trashed, and there were grizzled regulars who had been sitting on the same stool for a decade or two. I don’t believe it.

Nick Burger @nickburgerdc.bsky.social · 09/08/2026

I agree, makes no sense. This is focusing on (but not solving) a much broader problem of people believing that once they’re in the median “lane” they can just keep going (straight, left onto Penn, right onto G in this case, etc). The issue isn’t “no right on red” it’s just people ignoring the red.
