I’m not in the field anymore, but the caliber of these results is extraordinary. Some are incremental, but some are blockbusters (quasi Riemann!). It will be interesting to see how the community responds, both culturally and at a technical level (eg, where do people go with the quasi RH result?)

This was my assumption when you had stories about nobody knew where the wiring ran. But then I thought, surely, no, your sparks will have checked that already?

People who can see any empire as anything other than a colossal crime against humanity have never actually thought about it. Or possibly are psychopaths.

For the 60s, Larkin liked 1963, but he had personal reasons.

The reason spices were valuable is that rich people (including but not only other Brits) wanted to put them on their food. So the setup for the joke is sound: the British (with other C15-19 expansionary Euro powers) did in fact conquer (much of, sigh) the world _to spice their food_.

Obvious exceptions for people like Musk who mainly own a gajillion shares in a public company. Even the Forbes interns can multiply two numbers.

All those charts and tables and sites are just completely made up. They have to be. Why does anyone believe them at all? The _only_ people who know what a rich person owns are the person and their accountant. And even they lie to each other.

Let’s see: Starmer, Sunak, Truss, Johnson, May: that’s 5 for sure. Cameron was effective at tearing everything apart and setting it on fire for nearly a decade. Brown should have a bit of credit for how the GFC turned out but couldn’t lead. And his predecessor should probably not be mentioned here.

But p-zombies, as originally defined, are ~as real as zombikes (physically identical to bikes in every way, but when you turn the pedals, the wheels don’t go round). So it’s the wrong frame for this problem, which is very real indeed (agents are making me much more productive but also stupider).

Digital rights activists have long railed at the use of the term "IP," criticizing it for being deceptively imprecise and also rhetorically dishonest. I get where these objections are coming from, but I think they're misguided.

AI need not use any water at all. Closed-loop cooling data centres are a thing. In water-stressed areas, they should be stipulated by planning regulations.

Data centres don’t need to consume any water at all. Closed-loop cooling is a thing. It’s just more expensive. Demand regulations that require it.

The Labour Party’s women’s conference on 26/9/26 was an embarrassing farce, with only 200 delegates of the 1,000 normal attendance (no major unions) in protest of the Labour Party’s shameful abandonment of trans people following the legally absurd ruling of the Supreme Court in FWS in April 2025.

This. Open app on my personal phone, hit big friendly “new item” button, take a picture of (hotel/restaurant/bar) receipt, hit big friendly “submit” button, done. Money materialises in my account. Some elves somewhere figure out how much it was, in what currency, for what project, etc.

Seems the difference between ‘protestors’ and ‘terrorists’ is that protestors wear balaclavas while terrorists hold placards.

Release of OCaml 5.5.1
We have the pleasure of celebrating the birthday of Giovanni Girolamo Saccheri by announcing the release of OCaml version 5.5.1. This patch-level release fixes a major type system bug for module-dependent functions and also contains two security fixes for the runtime: one in the Marshal module, another inside the loading of bytecode. At a less severe level, this release also fixes two bugs in the runtime for concurrent programs, another runtime bug for musl users; and a handful of other bugs. The release also restores support for cloning the compiler on macOS. Overall, we are strongly advising you to switch to OCaml 5.5.1 if you were already using OCaml 5.5.0. The full list of changes can be found in the full changelog. --- Installation Instructions The base compiler can be installed as an opam switch with the following commands: opam update opam switch create 5.5.1 The source code for the release is also directly available on: * GitHub * OCaml archives at Inria Fine-Tuned Compiler Configuration If you want to tweak the configuration of the compiler, you can switch to the option variant with: opam update opam switch create ocaml-variants.5.5.1+options where is a space separated list of ocaml-option-* packages. For instance, for a flambda and no-flat-float-array switch: opam switch create 5.5.1+flambda+nffa ocaml-variants.5.5.1+options ocaml-option-flambda ocaml-option-no-flat-float-array

The least implausible scenario over the next couple of years is that an agent swarm bricks the internet backbone. That would be pretty bad: -everyone uses the internet for -everything. Some governments would fall, supply chains would disintegrate, some people would starve.

If I were Rep Beatty (who is doing an excellent job fighting for the memory of JFK) I would propose the hypothetical of renaming the big obelisk as “the Trump Monument”, or, for that matter, renaming the city as “Trump, DC”. Get the appeals court, or SCOTUS, on the record as to their view of that.
