Don’t do it! It’s a nostalgia trap. I was talking about this with @anil.recoil.org the other day and was saying you can’t recapture A) Youth, and B) Your old guild’s sociality

So it’s a speech recognition failure rather than a query shape failure ?

Sorry but this irks me. It’s new, we’re curious nerds, so what was your learning to share from this ? What do we need to avoid ? Is this something many of us will experience ? Was the query something basic? Complex ? Is it still indexing ? Cmon….

I wonder if they will seek to control any potential monetisation of that like Apple do.

Anil's made an absolutely EPIC writeup of all the behind-the-scenes work it takes to implement and maintain your own email service without drowning in spam. Also it's the first mention that recoil.org has its own IPv4 range, which I still can't quite believe.

Yeah. It’s a balance. It never pays to stay perfectly contented (especially with the current tech disruption), but also you want to feel good about what you do.

I am continuing to enjoy playing with OpenClaw. I recently tried out the process of generating self-taught skills, and made a post which unpicks how this kinda crazy process works. nick.recoil.org/notes/2026/s...

Self taught skills in OpenClaw
I had my first attempt at getting OpenClaw to turn a relatively basic prompt from me into a reusable skill. It worked, but it wasn’t without issues, so I wanted to dig into how the process worked.

I've written up an experiment with Blender's geometry nodes I made last year. In particular I wanted to learn about the simulation capabilities, so I challenged myself to make a looping animation of some nice autumn leaves fluttering to the ground. nick.recoil.org/articles/ble...

To my mind, the only value in preserving old domain data would be that Google or whoever replace the old site’s entries with the new, but that seems incredibly unlikely

It's deployed, albeit temporarily, to exif.recoil.org. It's the first time I've experimented with PWA, and it Just Works (tm). Svelte and Vite are great.

The biggest false-start was the initial library chosen (Exif-HEIC.js) didn't have typescript bindings, and it got into a horrible pickle trying to mix JS and TS code. In the end I got it to use exifr, as it worked with fine with HEIC. Then the only hand tweaks were to the table layout.

Today I found out exactly how violently the old style of CFL bulb can fail. Big pop, burning smell, cue me running around pulling every plug out the wall until my nose lead me to the lampshade. I’m glad we have got past this as a “normal” failure mode!

I need to pick some out-of-copyright romance novels through my LLM book reading project. I did try some Tolstoy but all the triple barrelled Russian names blew its tiny mind. Need relatively basic stuff, but mostly we consider the great works. Who wrote trashy novels around the turn of last century?
020
Nick Ludlam @nick.recoil.org · 22/04/2025
Yeah that has less immediately problematic implications. I should try putting the name of the book as a big horizontal bar in the background
