Ah yes, perhaps the most beloved literary trope of all: the classic McMuffin
A screenshot that reads: Moore throws in a Hitchcock-style McMuffin in the shape of a secret tape recording which will reveal just who has been betraying the gangsters.
The problem is that no-one has a machine on which to play it.

I read the Cornell documents, and they paint an extremely grim picture of a group of men who saw Jane Doe not as a fellow human being, but as a vending machine dispensing bro points they could cash in with their buddies. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

I suppose I do see this second hand in the acting / theatre space where being talented plays second fiddle to talented AND connected / a nepo baby. I suppose my field of endeavour is somewhat less prone to that.

Yes and I think that’s what I detected - the private school “pitch” plays on the insecurities of middle class parents in particular, when actually if you are already doing the basics right before school chances are your kids will probably do very well in state schools, all things being equal etc

As I said I have been through a private system myself. The “contacts” and “networks” I was given access to have had no value whatsoever. I appreciate that my field of work (arguably more meritocratic than most) and the country I moved to may have wiped out those advantages, but I am deeply skeptical

Having been through a private system myself, when it came time for schooling we looked very closely at the costs and benefits. Our conclusion was that private schools probably presented a better standard of instruction but that the fees would pay for an awful lot of private tutoring.

With the Strait of Hormuz closed, Iraq has resorted to moving its oil across the desert to Syria in hundreds of tanker trucks, in true Mad Max style. From there, it will be shipped to worldwide markets.

Provided you keep service units tightly connected to a locality (as they were historically!) there’s no reason it can’t work here for the vast majority.

Obviously the biggest complication is couples with children; but you could exclude one caregiver from a couple from mandatory service. Otherwise make it universal.

I’m a big advocate in ergonomics for trying different things to see how you get on with them - every body is slightly different so some people are going to fit better with some things than others. Personally never got on with vertical meeses but YMMV

This is exactly it. You tell it what to do and it tries to figure out how to do it using what it has access to. Keep it in a sandbox and it is powerless. This stuff is all utter nonsense for PR clicks and (somewhat more ominously) for trying to raise barriers to entry for open models.

I really hate the framing of these stories as "an AI agent broke out and hacked something." No, an inadequate sandbox meant that a powerful and unpredictable computer program was set loose on the open internet by the company that designed it. The agency isn't with the "AI agent", it's with the firm

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)

“Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.” Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea (La Nausée)
