Food, beer, unsuccessful sports teams, even less successful political movements. Giving a shit since 1969, and paying the price for it in depression, anxiety and unhealthy coping mechanisms.

All-time leading world cup goal scorer changes national allegiance during tournament? That's against the rules, surely?
Screenshot of BBC sport website accidentally claiming that Lionel Messi scored in a game behind played against Austria by Australia instead of his actual nation, Argentina.

Why are councils so unbelievably bad at UX design? Telling people to email one address, while actually sending their email somewhere else is confusing at best, and likely to put some people off from sending an email at all. Maybe that's the intention?
Screen capture of a page on the South Kesteven District Council website, where a link for sending an email to enquire about council tax issues has a "mail to" link that doesn't match the published email address.

I really, really, really need there to be a swimming pool just out of shot, otherwise this picture raises far too many questions.

I'm pretty sure that's my large intestine. Not sure when I left it in a house in Ireland though.

We used to bring the TV into the bar at the Geese & Fountain to show the Tour de France, but we didn't get many come in to watch it, sadly.

You have to account for the painful amounts of alcohol duty and tax in the UK, but £7.50 should buy a very good pint of craft beer in most parts of the UK.

Dare I ask, "what do you do with it?" I can't imagine eating the peel side. Licking the sugar side would result in the sugar melting and the lemon falling off the stick. So what is it for? Swirling in a drink?

With the Russians proudly waving their flags, which rather takes the shine off the event, sadly.

Almost as though the whole thing was a giant scam. Hard to believe with such principled men in charge though, eh?

Even in this damaged world of crowd funders going nowhere they must have broken records for taking people's money, and giving them the square root of nothing at all. Over and over again, some punks.

Of course, these days, with fees and loans replacing grants, students generally do live in a very real world of part time work, shit housing and debt, so the whole concept is a generation out of date, but so is most rhetoric from the Labour right.

Nick @nick.4glengate.net · 02/03/2026
But all those good and decent politics can be dismissed as unrealistic in the 'real world' if it's suggested that only students, with their cosseted existence, can adopt them. It's the cynic's defence against all principles.

In their defence, it's much shorter than "disembark" and probably was in common use when the tube network was first built.

All you can do is take solace in the hope that the wait staff will almost certainly have clocked what's going on, and told the kitchen staff, who will have taken pre-emptive revenge with some wasabi or sriracha.

Hannah Spencer's victory speech is such a restatement of human values: honesty, integrity, pride in her working class roots and her community. A beautiful thing .

BBC comment that Nigel Farage has been "ever-present" on the campaign trail in the Gorton and Denton by-election, even though (a) there have been several reports of him being overseas during the election period, and (b) he's apparently not there today. He gets such a free ride.

They just can't cope with a party leader who isn't in parliament, because being in parliament is how you know a politician is important. Yet if Polanski had been the candidate, the media would have denounced the Greens for not having a local candidate.

Dangerous game played by Labour's Lucy Powell claiming that unlike tonight's by-election, the general election will be about "who people want to form the next government, which will be between Labour and Reform". Unlikely people would choose another Labour government given experience of this one.

The BBC report doesn't accuse her of hypocrisy or deceitfulness or even racism, all of which would be easy to pin on her. Instead the BBC effectively publicises her own statement claiming this will improve literacy standards in the county.

Today Andrea Jenkyns, Reform mayor of Lincolnshire, has made a decision to cut all funding for English lessons for foreign nationals in the county. So Lincolnshire will no longer make the effort to help people integrate, but she will doubtless continue to criticise them if they struggle to do so.

Nick @nick.4glengate.net · 26/02/2026
So Reform have been making headlines for the past couple of weeks frothing about the "millions" of foreign-born British residents who "cannot speak English” [as well as they speak smoother language].

@leicestermercury.co.uk headline "Rowett fears City star's season could be over" Story: second-choice left back, who most fans wanted rid off last summer, has been injured. Honestly their use of "star" to mean "has played for the first team in at least one competitive fixture" is really annoying.

Shouldn't the phrase be "leave everything on the pitch"? I know it's used both ways but isn't it supposed to mean you use up every bit of energy in the game and come back to the changing room completely empty and drained? Like "I could care less" instead of "couldn't". Anyway, good luck for today!

You're not "only" anything! Bidspotter is fun even if you don't buy anything, but every so often there is a sous vide or a thermo or suchlike. I have a weakness for immersion blenders, which sounds like a fetish now I've written it down, but I promise it's above board! Only use them in the kitchen!

I was just going to reply to your first post and say that Stephy was the let-down defensively, but then I see you've nailed it in the follow up. Definite signs of improvement, if we ever get JJ back on the pitch we will have a chance to be a decent side again. Daka's header was agonising.
