In the garden today: the roses are still going strong in the October sunshine. What a year.

And that’s before we even start talking about the number of medieval kings, barons, Sheriffs of Nottingham and Princes of Denmark who live in undecorated, half-ruined castles blown to bits in the Civil War.

Also (and I appreciate this is straying into the realm of impossibly high expectations), if it’s set in the 17th Century, like Witchfinder General or The Visitation, they film it at a genuine 17th Century house, and I’m like okay, but it should be brand new. How come that house looks 350 years old?

Same goes for house interiors, curtains, furniture, wallpaper etc. If a film or show is set in, say, 1973, everyone seems to live in a house decked out from top to bottom like the 1973 Habitat catalogue. (And yet they’re seldom able to get the hairstyles even vaguely right.)

Avoided the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film after a ‘hilarious’ bit in the trailer where someone introduces ‘Miss Bennet, Miss Bennet, Miss Bennet, Miss Bennet and Miss Bennet.’ As if etiquette didn’t have that sorted. Miss Bennet is the eldest. Her sisters are Miss Elizabeth, Miss Lydia, etc. Bah.

Murder by Decree, in which Sherlock Holmes investigates the Ripper murders of 1888, begins with a shot of Tower Bridge, which opened in 1894. Bohemian Rhapsody’s many errors include Rick James’s 1981 single Super Freak playing at a party in 1980. And don’t get me started on huge modern wine glasses.

Boris Johnson, literally the most notorious and proven liar in British political history, accuses someone else of lying about stuff that he himself is known to have lied about. Lest we forget, this is the man who partied with his KGB-adjacent chum Lebedev in 2018. www.theguardian.com/politics/201...

Suella Braverman and her publisher appear to have made the same fundamental error that Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg and their publishers made before their books likewise bombed. It’s very simple: the sort of people who like Braverman, Johnson and Rees-Mogg are not the sort of people who buy books.

In the 1985 Doctor Who serial Vengeance on Varos, an authoritarian regime run by a weak man keeps the downtrodden population in line by broadcasting public executions to distract from the fact that it has tanked the economy through a combination of incompetence, arrogance and institutional cruelty.

Thinking Allowed, Open Country, You and Yours, Free Thinking, and The Artificial Human are all being axed. It would be interesting to know what percentage of the £500m cuts sought by the BBC will be saved by cherished and valuable little radio shows being cancelled by executives on huge salaries.

This is an utter brain stew of a speech. She pays fond tribute to Jeffrey Archer who leaves the world a ‘less colourful’ place, before crowing about Reform MPs going to prison. She attacks Labour taxes, then showers praise on Denis Healey, the most famous high-tax Labour chancellor in living memory.

Kemi Badenoch’s speech: 1. Say the word ‘Conference’ VERY solemnly. 2. Draw a fridge magnet from the bag at random and read out the facile slogan, starting very quietly before rapidly increasing in volume, ending with an emphatic finger jab. 3. Bask in rapturous applause. 4. Return to 1.

Flashback to that Sky News classic in February 2020, when the then Home Secretary Priti Patel demonstrated, over and over again, that she thought ‘counter-terrorism’ meant the same as ‘terrorism’. It wasn’t just a momentary slip of the tongue. She said it nine times. Here’s how Michael Spicer coped.

As car crashes go, this is right up there with the one in which Home Secretary Priti Patel let slip (not once but nine times) that she thought ‘counter-terrorism’ was a kind of terrorism. Quizzed on her latest flagship policy, Badenoch isn’t sure what it is. It might be a thing in the sea. Possibly.

This is what’s so remarkable about the gushing tributes. Even if you ignore all of Archer’s other crimes and misdemeanours, he betrayed the Conservatives by lying to them, causing colossal political embarrassment and damage to the party. Many Tories are old enough to remember. The rest should know.

Knowing how highly Kemi Badenoch prizes her lack of gaffes, she might wish to correct the softening effect of her chosen words: ‘We wanted him to be our mayoral candidate.’ Jeffrey Archer WAS the Tories’ mayoral candidate, endorsed by Margaret Thatcher and John Major, until his crimes were exposed.

Kemi Badenoch continues: ‘I can see why so many people were very fond of Jeffrey Archer. You know, we wanted him to be our mayoral candidate, and then yet another thing happened.’ Happened? He didn’t sit on a box of chocolates. He was sent to prison for perjury and perverting the course of justice.

‘He was someone that people liked so much that even after he’d been in tricky situations, he kept being given further chances.’ - Kemi Badenoch on Today, openly acknowledging that Jeffrey Archer’s life was very different from that of, for example, Monica Coghlan, who was destroyed by Archer’s lies.

3rd September 2026: asked if she would follow Reform’s example and block journalists from the Conservative Party conference, Kemi Badenoch replied: “We do not do that. It’s absolutely not something we believe in. We believe in free speech. We believe in a free press.” 30th September 2026:

And if “what ultimately awaits George” means his becoming king, as it clearly does, then self-evidently William does not know better than anyone what ultimately awaits him. The person who knows better than anyone what it’s like to be king would be (checks notes) the king.

Transfixed by the absolute honking gibberish of “evolves from schoolboy to future monarch” - what on earth is that supposed to mean? He’s been the future monarch since birth. He only became a schoolboy later. So if anything, he’s evolved from future monarch to schoolboy. Which is also gibberish.
