Sociologist, ecologist, educator, writer, mutant (i.e. neurodiverse), plays capoeira. Unflinching progressive, British-American. I don’t like reductive talk about people we disagree with, and I think it’s very unbecoming when progressives regress like that

He’s not “the only man” (🤦🏻) who can beat Reform/save Labour: men don’t save or beat parties: parties do. When he’s governing, he will be governing not the system he wants, but the one he’s inherited. Everything people like about him will be turned into a liability. Incredible waste of time.

I think Andy Burnham is being set up. The right wing media have so far left him alone because he differs from the Labour establishment. Once his becoming leader causes the chaos they want, they will do to him what they always do to every progressive leader, and it will be effective.

It’s remarkable; it’s not Labour’s vote, it’s Burnham’s. He can only be leader of what there is, not of what he wants, and men don’t save/beat parties: parties do. Once he beats Starmer, the right wing media will make mincemeat of him like they do every progressive leader, and it will work.

The whole leadership challenge circus is so tragically unnecessary and counterproductive it really takes the mick. None of it deals with the basic problem that government has no control over the main causes of real problems. This could be changed, but not while our attention is so distracted.

I think Britain needs to understand our predicament. The reason no politician can come up with a course of policies that will solve real problems is because the billionaire class & its aspirants has us all by the short & curlies. Until that’s sorted we really might as well sod politics.

nicholas-mutante.bsky.social @nicholas-mutante.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
All the nonsense about Starmer standing down is nonsense. If the party tries to make him, they will make themselves even less popular than they currently are, and he’s daring them to do it. As lackluster as he is, collectively I think the party is worse. He didn’t lose those seats by himself.

Do you want proof of thickness? The Reform councilors already in post were making a pathetic hash of their jobs, as expected by anyone who knew anything, and then about 1,500 more of them got elected. Further proof will emerge when the same thing happens again on a larger scale.

Please explain why we’re not allowed to say that people are wrong when they demonstrably are. The collapse of education and the rhetoric of natural hierarchy (both the product of preserving economic inequality) have indeed rendered people thick: that’s why it was done.

I’ve noticed today that the British media (or at least the ones who aren’t there to protect unequal wealth) have started to rightly call what Mar-a-Lardo says a “rant”. This is a good thing. The sooner you’re disabused of the illusion that there’s a symmetrical “special relationship”, the better.

This is fun. But it might actually be true, which is a bit more difficult to think. A marginalized minority who have little control over the conditions of the world, but whose unusual brains offer the world a LOT of creative benefit, cannot control the use to which their work is put. Sorry, but… 🤷‍♂️

The thing that makes it less noteworthy is the presence of Badenoch in the least unfavored position, a figure whose stupidity is only exceeded by that of a Liz Truss or similar. If Farage can be said to walk on water (and this is apparently widely believed), Badenoch’s feet don’t touch any surface.

Something so beautiful about Buddy Guy being there. His mentors like Howlin’ Wolf and his heroes like Lightnin’ Hopkins are all gone. Jimi Hendrix is dead. But he’s still here. He basically was in the same place as Sammy in Sinners and he’s still here.

I wonder what Trump sycos in the UK are saying about costs rising due to the actions of their favorite justifier of venal behavior. I’m sure they’ll find a way to blame it on Labour/lefty/woke, but it’s always fun to hear the embarrassing particulars of the desperate argumentative gymnastics.

I’m not saying autistic kids don’t lie and manipulate to get what they need: a) they’re kids; b) they’re not believed when they tell the truth, so why wouldn’t they lie? “But they’re not believed because they’re always making excuses!” No. You’ve got that backwards. Carts come after horses.

Autism spectrum: the “Boy who Cried Wolf” parable is constantly used to justify epistemic injustice against us. But what’s actually going on could be much better illustrated by a new parable: the Sheep who Cried “Black Sheep”. Willful hermeneutical ignorance has to be enforced, remember.

2/3 of the US are asses. Asses bray ignorantly about politics and vote according to whatever is the opposite of the verifiable (usually also the opposite of their own and everyone else’s interests). If anyone who understands anything speaks, the asses suddenly say they don’t want to talk politics.

To live within international law is far from perfect, and always has been. To live outside of it is something these idiots have never experienced, and probably could never endure.

“Oh so what if international law is ignored, when the lives of real people are on the line.” People who talk like this don’t understand reality. They literally would not have the kind of existence that enables them to say this nonsense without international law. Ossified privilege is not progress

If [people] were wise, the most arbitrary Princes could not hurt them; if they are not wise, the freest government is compelled to be a tyranny. I’m paraphrasing Blake (Notebook pg. 18). Rulers gonna rule. I don’t blame politicians for being politicians. Look in the mirror, citizen of the West.

Can you do justice to diversity through a one-size-fits-all approach? Would you expect a lion to eat grass, or an ox to hunt? Would you ask the eagle about digging roots, or the rabbit about soaring on updrafts? Would you hold a marginal few responsible for the sins of the dominant many?

Brexit was not ordinary working people sticking it to the elites—quite the reverse. Brexiters allied their priorities with those of rapacious elite perverts who wished us very explicit ill. The stink of perversion was obvious to me from the beginning, and is there for everyone to smell now.

When I think of the five senses, smell and taste are one. Imagination is the fifth, developed through the interaction of the human hand and eye. If you can learn to throw a rock accurately, you can imagine anything you allow yourself to. Music and art lubricate this allowance.
